Mary passed away several years ago; however, knowing her and her zeal for living one cannot help believing that her courage to go through the heart/lung transplant will encourage others to reach out and experience the unknown.

While this book is from the early days of successful thoracic organ transplant, Mary's beautiful and inspirational sharing of what it was like being the first heart and lung transplant recipient to survive (and she did survive 5 years!) would be eye opening and offer much hope to anyone facing that transplant today. Today that survival expectation is much better, of course, but it was because of her bravery and courage that that is the case now. Even through out of print, I highly recommend this reading, especially when you can get it as a used book for 19 cents (plus s&h). Looking at what was involved back then in the early 80's will make anyone appreciate even more the progress leading up to today's successful procedures that mean adding many years of fulfilling life to patients who thought they had death looking them in the face.
