HAD to add my two cents!,

This review is from: I'll Be Thinking of You (Audio CD)
I just added "Jesus is Lord" from this release on my internet web show and looking at the 1st review by C. Loos, I TOTALLY AGREE! Young folks, at first, may not want to hear this because this is their parents contemporary gospel music. But my 15yr old daughter can't help herself from enjoying the Eternal Grooves from back in the day like Andrae! "...bow down, bow down, b---ow down!"

This album takes me back to my youth when I first became a Chrisitan. The lyrics have so much meaning to me that it is diffucut to express my feelings about this album. It is just a wonderful album. The music and lyrics just inspire me and are a great blessing. I am proud to share this with my children and hope they receive the blessings that I had with these songs.

Filled with my Favorite '70's Musical Styles,
By hankaaron (Austin, TX. United States) - See all my reviews

My favorite musical artists in the '70s were Earth, Wind and Fire, Stevie Wonder and Steely Dan. Andrae Crouch's "I'll Be Thinking of You" is filled with contributions frome EWF's Philip Bailey, and contributions from Larry Carlton and Joe Sample (from the legendary Jazz Fusion combo "The Crusaders"), who also worked within the framework of the Steely Dan sound. And of course, Stevie makes a contribution on "I'll Be Thinking of You".The result is a record that would have uses it's Gospel roots to assimilate into the pop sound of it's day. The most obvious example of this is "I've Got the Best", which to me is the only "disco-gospel" song I've every heard- I find it hard to imagine a disco ball shining over the choir stand:) At the time the LP was release, many felt that Andrae had crossed the line and made an album that was too pop. That might have been the case, as "Jesus Is Lord" was the only song to get airplay on gospel radio. And it has since become a gospel standard itself. That's no surprise since its also the only song on the album with a more traditional gospel sound.

I love Andrea Crouch and his music....especially his old stuff! He was always ahead of his time. Andrea is a master psalmist. When he has the right producer and ample money to plan and produce a quality project, it is always excellant. "I'll Be Thinking Of You" was wonderful and contemporary for it's time. If you are an Andrea Crouch fan, this compilation of music in CD format is a must for your collection!

the "ground-breaking" album,

When AC branched out & did this '2nd' solo album (no "...& the Disciples"), he reached beyond the so-called church-goers for musical contributions: Stevie Wonder, Larry Carlton, Philip Bailey, Joe Sample, debut artists Kristle Murden & Howard Smith, etc. He also worked with Larry & Joe before & also had some Disciples contribute as well. I don't think he ever cut anyone out who wanted to be a part of his projects. He worked with everybody. I call this the ground-breaking album because both gospel & secular stations began to play "I'll Be Thinking of You". AC now became the trailblazer when it came to airplay, shelf space in record stores, label opportunities & collaborations. Through all this he kept a level head & always a sense of humor. He was never simply just setting funky music to a positive message, it was always a biblical message. Thank you Andrae.

Andrae paved the way for the highly polished, progressive urban-flavored Christian music we listen to today. Most folks tend to forget that it was Andrae that helped legends like Walter Hawkins and the Winans kickstart their careers.I used have this on 8-track back in the day until it melted from playing it too much. Its still as great on CD. The album credits read like an All-Star Team of musicians and singers. Back then not many secular artists could get talent like this to play on their album, which further points to Andrae's Q-ish influence and importance in the pantheon of American music pioneers. To get R&B icons like Stevie Wonder and Phillip Bailey of Earth, Wind, and Fire to participate on a gospel was unheard of back then. But having great musicians means little if you don't have great songs, which are in abundance on this record. The title track and Jesus are noted favorites. But the Love Melody is simply awesome. And my favorite cut, I'm Just Looking for you, is a Jazz Fusion workout with a sweet saxophone solo to boot. A highly recommended, must-have classic! |
