Dated but hilarious, August 8, 2001
This review is from: Illegal Immoral & Fattening (Audio CD)
This was released in the mid-70's, went out of print in vinyl, then thankfully it was released on cd. Unless you followed these guys from their youth in the Turtles or you were a Mothers/Zappa fan, or spent your 80's New Years' at The Bottom Line in NYC, chances are you've never heard of them.
These guys are killer players and fantastic singers (evoking some harmonies complex enough to rival the Beach Boys) and all this results in their being gifted musical mimics. And you probably don't have to be a contemporary or a musical historian to get the ... jokes.
The record has two studio cuts at the beginning and the end--some are better than others (the title cut is great fun). But the real reason to buy this disc is for the live set that is sandwiched in between. Though there is some of it I can do without (The Tibetan Memory Trick)--but for the occasional meandering silliness, the rest of it is a true riot. It can veer into the X-rated and the four-letter words, but considering all we have in our face these days, this is tame.
If you are a collector who hunts for the unusual, this is a must for you.

varied, and still a lot of humor, January 10, 2001
You have to love them or hate them, people cannot be indifferent towards Flo and Eddie.
This album is really hard to get. In the end I paid some 12 dollars in Europe, but I have never seen it since. It's great that at least this album is somewhat available.
Some track by track comments:
Illegal, immoral and fattening Flo and Eddy describe their lifestyle. It's not really a warning, I think. Up tempo with some crazy C&W touches thrown in.
Rebecca A lovely ballad that (almost) sounds sincere.
Kama sutra time / Bang a gong (Get it on) Back to Zappa days with some hilarious dialogue in the middle. Flo and Eddy sang back up on the original (T Rex) Bang a gong, so it sounds natural
The Sanzini brothers return (with The Tibetan memory trick) Let's call it scat singing. Impossible to sing along to, great to hear once, but not very often.
Livin' in the jungle The introduction goes: "... and this is our negro song..." and we get a nice disco vamp with stunning wah wah guitar work. Nice song
Cheap Not what it says. Great up tempo song.
Kung fu killer In the introduction they refer to one hit wonder Carl Douglas who had a hit with (Everybody is) Kung fu fighting in 1974. That song is then more or less parodied, but it improves i nthe process.
Eddie, are you kidding / pop star massage unit / Jumpin' Jack Flash / My sweet lord Eddy will be familiar to Zappa fans. The pop star massage unit is a monologue that refers to the commercial potential of dildos based on famous people (rather than a 'neutral' one, I presume). The next two excerpts are songs by potential models for this unit.
Let me make love to you Another beautiful ballad, this time no cover but a Flo & Eddy original. Great.
There's no business like show business. The song we all know and love, with an ultra jazz fusion type introduction.
All in all perhaps not an album that is essential by any standard except for diehard Zappa fans, but still a very nice album, great songs, a cooking band and a lot of fun along the way. Part live (in Roxy, not elsewhere), part studio tracks. Recommended!

Humor is'nt dead...it just smells funny!, July 25, 1999

Flo & Eddie are two of the best vocalists of our times. With razor sharp wit and energy to spare. This disc is full of topical humor from the mid seventies. The content is only considered rude to those who have succumbed to todays inability to laugh at it's self. "Living in a jungle" and "Kama Sutra Time" are uproariously funny. No one is safe from the biting satire.CSN&Y,Jimi Hendrix,Joni Mithchell,Yoko Ono,Elton John, and many others are subject to the good natured ribbing;and the band is of unequaled talent. These guys rip off riffs like a profesional cat burglar.A must have for any Zappa fan,or anyone who is'nt afraid to laugh.
