A Dirty Trick To Play On A Fan!,
By
This review is from: The Illegal Man (Audio Cassette)
I am an anashamed Jerry Ahern fan, and have been since I read the first Dan TRack adventure more years ago than I care to remember. I enjoy Mr Ahern's style of writing, his sence of detail and the fact that he researches his subjects so carefully. I am one of those people who get irritated when the cowboy fires his six-shooter seven times or the spy cuts a pair of tool steel handcuffs off with a pair of wirecutters. That doesn't happen in an Ahern story. It also helps that I met the gentleman once, and he was gracious, polite, and patient with a meer fan. In short, while I freely acknowledge that he is no Shakespere, Mr Ahern writer a good adventure story. Which brings us to THE ILLEGAL MAN. "Abridged", the tape says, meaning that there is more of the story some editor chose to leave out for the sake of fitting the story onto the available tape space. It wouldn't be so bad if an unabridged version was available somewhere, but now I have to wonder what the writer put in the story that the editor left out. A dirty trick. But a fun book.

While this wasn't the best thriller/mystery I've ever read, it was a pretty good one. John has a secret life that he'd prefer stay uncovered. He has a good marriage, a daughter he adores and a successful business. Unfortunately for John, someone wants to change all that. After leaving for a short business trip, John comes home a wanted man after someone tried to commit a murder and it was blamed on him. From that point on, he's on the run trying to stay alive and figure out who is trying to kill him. The plot was good and had a nice twist to it. The character development was decent -- sufficient for the story, and the motives were feasible. While the book will keep your interest, it's no real page-turner. In other words, I didn't miss any sleep from trying to stay up and read more, but on the other hand, I was interested in finding out what would happen next. In sum, I liked it and give it 3.5 stars. |
