Illegal avocado grove workers become heroes to the Larsons, volunteering to help the family complete their unique garden home after the builder quits. While working with the Mexicans, the Larsons and their two sons become fast friends. They develop a "Spanglish" language and enjoy singing around the Mexicans' campfire together. While living in their garage during construction, Mrs. Larson finds the Mexicans' rifles hidden under her son's mattress, takes a wild ride with immigration officers and feels forced to drive illegals around a border checkpoint when 27 men, women and children unexpectedly arrive from Mexico! This fictionalized saga of the author's actual experiences aptly describes the life of the Mexican illegals. Ms. Bova promotes currently proposed legislation that would allow Mexican workers to enter legally and safely providing legal labor for our farmers. Our country's resources could then be used to prevent criminals, smugglers, and terrorists from crossing our borders.
