Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

YARMOUTH, Maine, October 2, 2000—With the addition of over 7,000 new road names, the popular Illinois Atlas & Gazetteer™ has been significantly updated to reflect emergency 9-1-1 system changes, as well as growth in communities statewide.

The Illinois Atlas & Gazetteer is part of the well-known 50-state Atlas & Gazetteer™ series by DeLorme. These unique atlases incorporate topographic maps into a handy book format and provide a high level of detail, including back roads, boat ramps, campgrounds, outdoor recreation sites and points of interest-all cross-referenced to and located on the maps.

"We attempt to update our atlases on a regular basis," said DeLorme spokesman Caleb Mason. "With this latest revision, we have incorporated thousands of name changes to Illinois roads, due in large part to 9-1-1 systems that mandate unique road names. This newest edition is the most up-to-date source for Illinois road names. These road name updates are enormously important to the DeLorme mission, which is to provide the most up-to-date detail available."

As always, map corrections provided by the Illinois State Department of Transportation and DeLorme customers have been incorporated into this latest edition (copyright 2000).

In addition to the map updates, the cover of the Illinois Atlas & Gazetteer has been re-designed. The new appearance is in keeping with the contemporary look of DeLorme software products, while retaining DeLorme's traditional strong map image.

While the Atlas & Gazetteer has an outdoor recreation theme, its breadth of coverage and depth of detail makes it popular among people of many different occupations and interests. With once familiar road names changing and many previously unnamed roads now identified for 9-1-1 systems, this newest Illinois Atlas & Gazetteer is a unique, useful resource for business travelers, rescue teams, hobbyists (such as genealogists and rail buffs) and individuals seeking comprehensive maps for home or office reference. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful, but could be improved, April 15, 2000
This review is from: Illinois Atlas and Gazetteer (Paperback)
I found this atlas useful, but I would be hard pressed to call it a topographical atlas. For a publication of its size, it offers decent detail, but leaves out useful info like road names. I found it difficult to use once I left the US highways and state routes. Also, the map scale is difficult to find.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gazetteer is Big Help, February 5, 2009

Gazetteers from DeLorme are exceptional. I like the detail and ease of use. The only thing I wish they still did is to list what state parks have cabin rentals and the amenities provided. I have an old DeLorme gazetteer that provides this information.

I consult this guide whenever I take any backroad trips. Forget online map services, they only display the destination and maybe little in between. This is a very useful map for my needs
