5.0 out of 5 stars On a Need to Know Basis
An easy to use reference book which tells the Illinois gardner what to plant, where to plant, and when to prune. It's a very useful handbook for novice and not-so-novice midwest gardners.

1.0 out of 5 stars Plants that grow in Illinois vs. plants that are NATIVE to Illinois
I have been looking for books that show pictures/give descriptions of plants that are native to Illinois instead of plants that are from Europe, Asia, etc that happen to survive here. This book is not a book about Illinois plants at all, rather it tells you what plants you can plant from other regions that can thrive here. For example, Barberry, which is native to Europe...

4.0 out of 5 stars Handy Reference, April 25, 2005
This is a handy reference for Illinois gardeners with quite a bit of inside info - what will really grow here and what won't -and I often refer to it. The information on specific varieties could be a little more meaty but overall this is well worth the price. I bought a copy of the first edition of this book and it wasn't very good. If you did also you should give Fizzell a second chance - this revised edition is much better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have for Illinois Gardeners, October 1, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a must-have book for Illinois Gardeners. If you have the budget to buy only one book, you should buy this. I am still waiting for the companion book "Month-By-Month Gardening"; as it is out of stock at Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Ag 101, January 3, 2012
I'm learning to farm and I was told this would be a great book. Received as a gift from my Amazon Wishlist and I can't wait to start reading it. I'm also looking forward to getting these books as well: Guide to Illinois Vegetable Gardening (Vegetable Gardening Guides) and The Veggie Gardener's Answer Book: Solutions to Every Problem You'll Ever Face; Answers to Every Question You'll Ever Ask (Answer Book (Storey))

1.0 out of 5 stars Plants that grow in Illinois vs. plants that are NATIVE to Illinois, July 2, 2011
I have been looking for books that show pictures/give descriptions of plants that are native to Illinois instead of plants that are from Europe, Asia, etc that happen to survive here. This book is not a book about Illinois plants at all, rather it tells you what plants you can plant from other regions that can thrive here. For example, Barberry, which is native to Europe and Asia (two different species), is an invasive plant that has found its way to the forest preserves in Illinois and crowds out native plants. Barberry will create a thicket of thorny shrubs where other plants cannot survive.

If this book did not claim to be about Illinois gardening, then it would not surprise me if it had non-natives, but since it is supposedly about Illinois gardening, I would expect them to list species that actually belong in Illinois.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this book, June 1, 2009
I just love this book. It has great information and beautiful pictures. I keep it on my end table all the time. I bought the book because my son-in-law has the Tennessee version and I thought that one was very well done. I actually bought two of these books, one for my mother-in-law for Mother's Day and one for me!

This book is a very thorough reference guide about gardening in Illinois. There's a lot of information here about different types of plants, how and when to plant them, and tips on how to care for them. As a novice gardener, I wish there was a bit more information on how to go about planning and designing a garden, but perhaps I need to get an even more basic book like "Gardening for Dummies!" I'm sure this book will be even more useful to me down the line once I'm a bit more knowledgeable about gardening.
