This book is invaluable to anyone new to the world of native plants with the goal of achieving and maintaining a healthy savanna and mesic prairie. It's helpful that this book covers both savanna and prairie plants especially when these areas converge, as is the case with my property. I appreciate that Kurz includes each plant's history, and whether it is native, European, or Asian, etc. My only constructive criticism would be - and it may well be a production decision - is that invasive plants are listed and pictured amongst the native plants in respective color sections. Perhaps a second edition could list and picture the invasive/non-natives in a separate color-coded section titled "Invasive/non-native" after all of the native plants.

It is a little too big for carrying in a pocket, but I highly recommend taking it along whenever you can. It has very nice descriptions, photos, and diagrams. The flowers are arranged by color, which makes it easier for me to do identification. I bought mine used, which saved a few bucks. There are many websites that offer similar information in this format, but this book works great without batteries, internet connectivity, or a cell tower nearby.

This is my second purchase of this book. I got the first one from the Illinois DNR I think, but it's no longer available there. Very happy to find one on Amazon. Great pictures, descriptions, and a bit of history on each flower and the divisions by color in the book aids in locating the plant you're looking for. Great book!
