Not what I expected...,

This review is from: Illumination (Audio CD)
Let me just start off by saying I'm a huge Mediaeval Baebes fan. I have all 8 of their albums and have seen them live twice. This album was quite shocking to hear, esp. the first track. Upon first listen, I thought to myself, "is this the right album?" Not that it sounds bad or anything, it's just a lot different than their previous work. I have a feeling this band will fade out in the next couple of years. It just seems like their run lately is limited, and with each album, they have less and less members. For all those looking to check out Mediaeval Baebes, I would start with Undrentide. That is the best album by far. This one might take some time to grow on me.

For someone that has followed their ups and downs this cd is defenitely an up. It's very "oriental"(think India, Japan or Bali) in it's musical arrangements so maybe that's why it'sound "different" but it's still mediaeval. If you are a fan you'll enjoy it, if first timer maybe too slow or lacking that wow effect.

Different from their other work, but very good,

This album is quite different from all their others, which I just love. It is a little more staccato and some of the songs are more bombastic. Still has a chant-like quality to most of it. It took me a couple listens to get used to the difference, but now I love it.
It has a bit more of a communal quality to it. A couple songs have crowds singing with them. You'll dig the song about the Blacksmith!

The Baebes Never Disappoint!,

Part of the fun with Baebes albums is you never know what you're going to get! Every album has had a different "flavor", yet they all provide their trademarks; gorgeous harmonies, a varied mix of styles, and lush presentation. This album is going into heavy rotation at my house and my daughter's - thanks again, Ladies, for another great listening experience!

I cannot even begin to describe how wonderful this record is, so I will leave it up to the fans to purchase "Illumination" and judge for yourselves.
