Wishbone Ash's classic era (the first 3 albums) had hints of metal, prog, and folk without really embracing any of these fully. They also combined nice harmony vocals and tasteful musicianship on every instrument. By the mid-70s, they seem to have scaled back on most of these elements that made them stand out, and become a rather bland, forgettable rock band. "Illuminations" claimed to be an "Argus for the 90's" (Argus being their third and most popular album). Sadly, it doesn't quite deliver. It's not bad, merely kind of forgettable - there's some nice bits here and there, but it doesn't really rock much or stray from mainstream (classic) rock enough to be memorable. The only other post-70's album I've heard by them, Bona Fide (from 2002 with an almost compelte different lineup) rocks a lot more, and while remaining in a general classic rock context, does it well.

This is probably the best of the Wishbone Ash albums made without Martin Turner. Word has it that Andy Powell set out to make a follow-up to the famed 1972 Argus album. He didn't succeed, but it's a decent effort and does have more Wishbone Ash feel than the other albums Powell has made under the Ash name.

songwriting is weak here. but songwriting wasn't ash's strong point. guitar(s) was their forte. plenty of it here.
just doesn't have the wishbone original lineup magic and majesty. worth getting for historical completion.
