This review is from: The Illustrated 9/11 Commission Report (Paperback)
An impressive graphic attempt to condense the 9/11 Commission Report (ISBN 0393326713) to manageable proportions for, as the Foreword suggests, 'a new set of readers'. The paperback edition of the Report had 567 pages though 139 of those were additional notes to the thirteen chapters so the original is not that different from a chunky paperback novel but as it dealt with real life it's a lot more interesting than fiction.
I thought the look of the book was excellent. Printed on quality matt paper with plenty of strong pages of pure graphics mixed in with Ernie Colon's stylish artwork (given the choice though I would have preferred a Frank Springer style) showing lots of variations to the standard comic panel format. His use of government department logos and other graphics is really impressive. The first twenty-five pages are black and show a countdown of the four planes to their targets, maps, aircraft, buildings and straightforward action panels blend together perfectly. Chapter nine: Heroism and Horror has thirteen pages cleverly capturing the tragedy of the planes crashing into the two towers and the Pentagon. The last two chapters 'What to do?' and 'How to do it?' reveal the shortcomings of the various government and state agencies to terrorism and the Commission's recommendations, here Colon uses extensive non-panel imagery.
The bulk of the book explains the origins of al Qaeda and how the terrorists managed to organise such a devastating attack and because this is not full of fight sequences and action on every page, Colon has tried hard (and succeeds) in pushing the story forward using a whole range of comic book format styles.
My only reservation about the book is that it simplifies a huge amount of information in the original report and because it is presented in a graphic novel style it could sort of trivialise the whole thing. However if this format is what it takes to get 'a new set of readers' interested that can only be a good thing.

This review is from: The Illustrated 9/11 Commission Report (Paperback)
I thought long and hard about what book I was going to read to post my 500th review, and fortuitously this book came my way. It gives us the essence of the original 9/11 Commission report without all the verbiage. Additionally, it's a graphic book, and the drawings are simply spectacular! The composers of this book have distilled the Report into the essentials, and we see the many lost opportunities that our government had to derail 9/11 before it happened, by simply capturing or killing Bin Laden. When it comes to the day of infamy itself, the drawings reflect the horror we all experienced. Sometime an event is so extraordinary that we cannot comprehend it, and this book shows us the awfulness of 9/11 and its consequences. This book deserves to be read by all thinking people, and prominently displayed in libraries, book stores and schools.
