5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone thinking of buying a used MB
This is THE book if you are considering a used Benz. Frank covers all makes and models. But starting with models from the 60's up to current he has comprehensive reviews, what to look for, and what to look out for. Hints on what is, and will be collectible. This book is enjoyable and informative to read, and has lots of great photos.

1.0 out of 5 stars Does not meet the hype
The title is very misleading. Remember that this book has not been updated since 1998, so unless you are looking to buy a car older than '98 this is really not a "buyer's guide". It has good coverage of Mercedes historically, so if you want to know about the various models from a collectors point of view this book would be appropriate, if you are in the market...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must for Mercedes Fans, March 21, 2000

This review is from: Illustrated Buyer's Guide Mercedes-Benz (Motorbooks International Illustrated Buyer's Guide) (Paperback)
The book title is a bit of a misnomer. While there's lots of very practical, highly useful information for the prospective buyer, the book also presents a comprehensive and highly readable survey of Mercedes history. If you have never quite been able to figure out what all the various model designations are, this book will answer your questions. As you can expect, the book is particularly helpful for those in the market for a used Benz. And the author treats those who need "daily drivers" as respectfully as the vintage collector. While the author is clearly a Mercedes enthusiast, he does not pull his punches in assessing the weak points in various models. This book is a "must read" before you go looking -- before you get three pointed stars in your eyes.

This is pretty much an essential book if you're thinking about acquiring a Mercedes, or just want to know your way around the line. Great explanations of features. Great info on the various models and how they changed over their years of production. Lots of photos and tables with specs. Succinct and to the point. Definitely worth getting.

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute necessity for a pre-owned Mercedes purchaser, April 9, 2001

Frank Barrett, as editor of "The Star," the magazine of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America, has become THE guru for classic Mercedes-Benz knowledge. I've been in the Mercedes business for 20 years. I'm considered very knowledgeable about Mercedes-Benz. But when someone talks about acquiring a classic Mercedes, I tell them to first buy this book. It can save a prospective purchaser a lot of money. It also acts as a quick source for statistics I've long since forgotten. It's a great reference book I'll expect to have available at my desk for a long time. It's well written, interesting, and accurate. If you need information about pre-owned or classic Mercedes, buy it.

This book is invaluable to MBZ lovers. It is written with love and experience and knowledge. If you've seen the others in this series (BMW, Jaguar, Corvette, Porsche, etc.) they simply don't compare in quality. The photos are terrific; the advice honest.

This is a must have for any MBZ lover.

4.0 out of 5 stars any Mercedes-Benz Enthusiast-Collector-Researcher . . . ., October 25, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Illustrated Buyer's Guide Mercedes-Benz (Motorbooks International Illustrated Buyer's Guide) (Paperback)
will appreciate this fine book . . . an excellent reference for ANY Mercedes-Bens enthusiast, collector, researcher, etc.

Lots of black and white photographs with a brief synopsis covering virtually all "production" (and a few non-production "custom-prototype") Mercedes cars from 1886 thru 2002.

Anecdotal information tells you why your particular model/version of a Mercedes car could be important.

Has an "Investment Rating" potential table.

I woke up one day wanting an old Merc, something from the 60's, 70's or 80's. I thought about it and realized that I knew next to nothing about them so I bought this book to learn about the different cars. It does the deed only I wish it had more detail pics however I understand you cannot have everything. Easy to read and understand.
