This review is from: The Illustrated Encyclopedia of 19th Century Firearms (R) (Salamander book) (Hardcover)
When I purchased this book, I was hoping it would essentially be a list of firearms of the period, with brief articles on each explaining their various qualities. Instead, the book is more general, discussing types of firearms, instead of specific ones. A few guns are given special treatment, and the information provided on them is detailed and complete. One thing I was pleased to discover in the book were clear explainations of how the firing mechanisms on the various types of weapons worked. Methods such as flint-lock, dog-lock, and so on, are explained using diagrams, giving the reader a clear understanding of how they function.
In effect, the book is a good introduction to firearms of the period, but hardly worthwhile as a deep reference. |
