From Booklist

More than 10 million people each year take to streams, lakes, or the ocean to fly-fish. Popularized recently in the film A River Runs through It, fly-fishing is to fishing what bow and arrow is to hunting: they contain an ethic that states that the skills of the sport and an appreciation of the environment and wildlife are more important than the kill. The encyclopedia has approximately 500 entries: terminology, biographies, associations, and techniques of fly-fishing. It is copiously illustrated with color photographs and line drawings that present visual displays of information, which are especially necessary for the entries on technique. Some entries are long essays, such as the 12-page Knots, with line drawings depicting in progressive diagrams the way each knot is tied. The entries Flyline and Fly-Tying Tools are four to five pages each. The majority of entries are 250-300 words. There are biographies here of angling greats. For example, Lee Wulff is described as "the most outstanding angler and angling conservationist of the 20th century"; he lived much of his life in New York City where he and his friends could be seen on weekends with their waders and fishing gear riding the subway out of the city to their country rivers. Wulff also promoted the concept of "catch and release" with such statements as "Game fish are too valuable to be caught only once." Such organization entries as International Game Fish Association give a history, purpose, and address. Entries for technical terminology and slang contain numerous cross-references to provide the reader with related information, such as, in the entry Bodkin: "A needle; see Dubbing Needle, Fly-Tying Tools."

The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Fly-Fishing, even to a nonangler, is a browser's delight and could be suitably placed in the circulating public library collection as well as in reference.
