This book is made to look like a nice dense, thorough selection of fairy tales. I expected, looking at how many pages were allotted to each story, that these would be somewhat accurate, satisfyingly long retellings. Unfortunately, they aren't. It is more like several picture books together in one book.

This book would probably work well for toddlers, preschoolers, and those with short attention spans. My 7 year old daughter, who likes a good story, was very disappointed when she finished the entire book in half an hour. The average page has 1 to 3 sentences; most of the page is pictures. The stories are not all like you remember them, either, which I suppose would be okay for some. Many of the versions are just "silly" and dumbed down. I understand wanting to make them less scary, but most of the soul has been taken out of the stories, and in some cases the plot is altered beyond recognition.

So overall, this would be good for small children and those who want a fluffy, quick bedtime story. For those looking for meatier versions of classics, look elsewhere.

Expertly designed by the team of Nancy Leschnifoff and Helen Wood, the "Usborne Illustrated Fairy Tales" is co-edited by Sarah Courtauld and Rosie Dickins to provide young readers with 352 pages of classic fairytales drawn from such popular sources as Hans Christian Anderson and the Brothers Grimm, and others. Enhanced throughout with color illustrations, the tend individual stories comprising this outstanding volume include Sleeping Beauty; the Emperor and the Nightingale; Beauty and the Beast; The Dragon Painter; The Frog Prince; The Elves and the Shoemaker; Little Red Riding Hood; Cinderella; The Swan Princess; The Emperor's New Clothes. An entertaining and handsome volume, the "Usborne Illustrated Fairy Tales" would make a welcome addition to any child's reading list and community library's fairytale/folklore collection for young readers.

My 10 year old daughter struggles with reading but loves these books. They are great because they make her feel she is successfully reading a chapter book although they are very easy with a lot of pictures. Because her reading comprehension is low it is nice that they are stories she is familiar with.

My niece is really into fairy tales right now (she's 3). And has seen this book at day care, but they don't usually read it. I don't think I've seen her that excited about any gift. What a hit!

There are pictures on every page, which makes it good for kids 4+.
My 4 year old daughter loved the stories and drawings and she wanted to read from that book every night.
The different stories make that book good for boys and girls, which is even better.
I would definitely recommend that book.

Awesome book! Cute renditions of classic stories and very nice illustrations. We have the "illustrated stories for Girls" and both my girls at around age 3 have been mesmerized by that book so I'm guessing this one will have the same affect.
