Book Description

October 20, 2008
The Illustrated Kitchen Bible is all quality content-a tremendous resource of over 1,000 delicious, achievable, and international recipes, with sumptuous photography, precise text, and innovative ideas.

This book takes recipes and techniques and puts them under the microscope. How to get the best when shopping? What the preparation and cooking stages are? What to look for? What should it feel and smell like? How to save the day if something isn't right? What to serve with it? What to do with the leftovers (if there are any)? The result is home cooking at its most perfect. AUTHOR BIO: Victoria Blashford-Snell trained at Le Cordon Bleu, runs a highly successful catering company in London, and is a regular cooking teacher and demonstrator in Italy, Somerset, and at London's Books for Cooks. She has co-authored DK's Hors d'Oeuvres.

Austrialia chef Brigitte Hafner writes the weekly recipes for The Sydney Morning Herald's Good Living and Melbourne Age's Epicure sections and with partner James Broadway, runs a popular wine bar and eatery in Melbourne's Fitzroy called The Gertrude Street Enoteca

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Veteran UK cookbook author and caterer Blashford-Snell (Diva Cooking, One Year at Books for Cooks) shares over a thousand recipes in this colossal "category-killer" dedicated to everyday food. Given the full-color, highly-informative DK treatment, each recipe is accompanied by a photo of the finished dish as well as at-a-glance information boxes with serving yields and approximate times. Those intimidated by the kitchen will find help in clear but detailed steps and straightforward, illustrated instructions for techniques like cutting up a whole chicken, prepping artichokes and making sauces. Blashford-Snell's catering experience is on display in the book's imaginative appetizer and "party bites" section; Wild Mushroom Tartlets, Chicken Liver Pate, Herbed Shrimp and Goat Cheese Wraps and multiple riffs on Croustades, a bite-sized bread cup filled with various savory creations, are easy to prepare and surefire hits. Every food group and cuisine is represented-from bread-making to burger-grilling to pad thai to Chocolate Bavarian Creams-and it's rounded out with tips on making grilled sandwiches and omelets, "cooking for a crowd" and working with leftovers, making it a fine choice for a first cookbook. Once they're comfortable, cooks should be tempted from their comfort zone with tasty variations, making this a go-to staple and a volume to grow with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love IT!!!!! November 24, 2008
By OP
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book on Saturday and have spent no less than 5 hours devouring it. I am a visual when it comes to cookbooks and the fact that EVERY single recipe had a picture was almost enough to sell me on this book. It's really heavy but since I don't plan to cart it around daily that should be ok. I love the picture gallery of what's coming up in each section. It makes it really easy to scan, find something that looks good, and then head to that page so you don't always have to flip through the entire book. One of my favorite features is the Techniques section in the back. It's not one of those cookbooks where you will really never make anything. If you love to cook and are willing to experiment this is a keeper!

3.0 out of 5 stars pretty good March 6, 2010
Format:Hardcover
I love the wide variety of recipes in this book and most importantly the sections on food preparation techniques. The only downside is after making about 6-7 recipes from this book I've noticed some bland recipes and a few small printing errors. For example, the german apple cake didn't call for baking powder but in step 3 it states, "Sift the flour, baking powder, and salt." The cake was also too salty. Because I'm still learning to cook I still recommend it because the instructions, illustrations, and new recipes were really helpful for a beginner.

Format:Hardcover
I bought this for my sister-in-law after I had recieved it from a friend. I love this cookbook! There are appetizing pictures of every recipe, and directions on how to do things like pipe meringue in the back of the book. I've cooked about ten different things from this book and everything has been delicious. I highly recommend it!
