From the Back Cover

The most current collection of data and illustrations in the marketplace. A must for anyone in the profession." ÐJOSEPH BRASWELL, ASID. From pen-and-ink to the computer and scanner, Art Nouveau to ergonomics, the country living room to the urban hotel lobby, The Illustrated Room provides a sweeping visual and historical chronicle of the finest interior design renderings through all ten decades of the twentieth century. Presenting a superb survey of styles, projects, and media, this one-of-a-kind treasury offers a sumptuous collection of sketches, presentation drawings, elevations, vignettes, and room paintings by foremost designers and professional renderers from around the world. Whether focusing on the distinctive illustrations of such masters as Frank Lloyd Wright, Hugh Ferriss, and Elizabeth Hoopes...the rise, ebb, and reinterpretation of such seminal movements as Arts and Crafts, Art Deco, and the International Style...or the creative possibilities interpreted by watercolor, gouache, and CADD, The Illustrated Room serves as a font of ideas and inspiration for interior designers, architects, renderers, and allied professionals. At the same time, it showcases the rendererOs skill and celebrates a uniquely vital 20th-century art form.

If you are looking for a book to teach you how to render
interiors, as I did, then this is not the book for you.
If you are interested in looking at beautifully rendered interiors throughout the last century, then you will love
this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Good Collection of Interior Drawings, November 26, 2007

This review is from: The Illustrated Room: 20th Century Interior Design Rendering (Hardcover)
While it is interesting as a survey of non-photo interior design representations, it is too incomplete to be a serious reference. The text is minimal as well as unreliable. (Legendary decorators Sister Parish and Dorothy Draper were NOT siblings!) The chronological chapters are not particularly helpful; the 1990's illustrations by the talented Jeremiah Goodman are stylistically identical to his work 30 years earlier, for example. Only a handful of computer-generated renderings are shown. Fortunately mid-century work by Grace Fakes and Elizabeth Hoopes, both of McMillen Inc., and later work by Albert Hadley of Parish-Hadley are included for those interested in classic residential interior design. But two of the most famous renderers of the opulent eighties, Mark Hampton and James Steinmeyer, are not even mentioned. Although not a bad book as a provider of a showcase of various illustrating styles, it falls far short as a definitive reference of rendering of 20th century interior design.
