If you are looking for a book to teach you how to renderinteriors, as I did, then this is not the book for you. If you are interested in looking at beautifully rendered interiors throughout the last century, then you will love this book.

While it is interesting as a survey of non-photo interior design representations, it is too incomplete to be a serious reference. The text is minimal as well as unreliable. (Legendary decorators Sister Parish and Dorothy Draper were NOT siblings!) The chronological chapters are not particularly helpful; the 1990's illustrations by the talented Jeremiah Goodman are stylistically identical to his work 30 years earlier, for example. Only a handful of computer-generated renderings are shown. Fortunately mid-century work by Grace Fakes and Elizabeth Hoopes, both of McMillen Inc., and later work by Albert Hadley of Parish-Hadley are included for those interested in classic residential interior design. But two of the most famous renderers of the opulent eighties, Mark Hampton and James Steinmeyer, are not even mentioned. Although not a bad book as a provider of a showcase of various illustrating styles, it falls far short as a definitive reference of rendering of 20th century interior design.
