About the Author

Ted Alspach is the author of more than 20 books, including the previous five editions of the Illustrator Bible, Illustrator Studio Secrets, Illustrator Filter Finesse, and Photshop Complete. He is currently the product manager for Adobe Illustrator. He is also a contributing editor to Adobe Magazine.

Kelly L. Murdock has written extensively on 3D graphics and Web technologies. His credits include the 3ds max 4 Bible, the Adobe Atmosphere Bible, Master HTML and XHTML Visually, and JavaScript Blueprints. He is the creative force behind the children's education site www.animabets.com.

This book is OK for an intermediate or an advanced user especially if you are the kind of person who can visualise what the author is talking about && if you are comfortable with large volumes of text telling you how to do things in illustrator. This kind of visualisation to understand the concept and putting it to practice could eventually take up too much of your precious time. I especially had a tough time trying to understand what the author was talking about making seamless tiles on page 406 of the book. After referring to another book called "Illustrator 9 Wow Book" I figured out that I can make seamless tiles using a different & much more easy technique.
Still I gave it a 4/5 rating since I could manage the rest of the topics in this book.
If you like a visual approach on Illustrator 10 training try one of the videotraining packages on DVD...

I ordered this book because it looked encyclopedic and I hoped I could get by with a single reference work on Illustrator. While this book has a lot of information and is useful, I wouldn't recommend it if it's the only or the first book you're going to get. This volume is rather thin in terms of useful graphics and illustrations, ironically for a book on how to use a program called "Illustrator." It is not tightly edited. In using it I have encountered numerous glitches: instances where the software doesn't look or behave quite as described, concepts and terms are used that have not been previously defined or explained, figures are mis-identified in the text, tools and techniques are recommended without a clear explanation of how to find them in the menus, etc etc.

I stumbled on this book a few months ago and it has opened up the world of Illustrator to me like nothing else has been able to. It is like the book was written with me in mind. I passed it on to my friend, and she found it to be just as helpful.

A great book.
