Editorial Reviews

2014 release from the Country singer/songwriter includes duets with Lee Ann Womack, Buddy Miller and Patty Loveless. Jim Lauderdale is a Grammy-winning musician and one of the most respected artists working the Bluegrass, Country and Americana music communities today. He is considered one of Nashville's "A" list of songwriters with songs recorded by artists such as Patty Loveless, Shelby Lynne, Solomon Burke, The Dixie Chicks and George Strait, who has had numerous hits with Jim's songs. Jim's music has been featured recently on the ABC hit show Nashville and he had several tracks on the soundtrack of the successful film Pure Country. Jim is also in high demand as a player, touring with the likes of Lucinda Williams, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Rhonda Vincent and Elvis Costello.

He has to be one of the hardest working singer/songwriters in the business.

Excellent release; how does his originality and quality remain so high when he releases so many recordings? This one has a country sound in the vain of Whisper and Country Super Hits Volume One. Twenty songs and none a throwaway. Best album of 2014 for me so far.

Jim Lauderdale
"I'm A Song"
(Sky Crunch Records, 2014)
. . . .

A rock-solid hard-country set from Nashville tunesmith Jim Lauderdale.

A highly successful Top 40 songwriter, Lauderdale often seems to revel in his own stubborn square-peggedness, packing his albums with odd, angular, idiosyncratic tunes that sometimes don't have the singalong choruses one usually associates with Nashville hits... On this record, though, he delivers perhaps his best, most concentrated, purest honky-tonk album to date, packing in one tight, muscular tune after another. The musicianship is superb, full of punchy, early '70s-style Nashville twang, a style that perfectly matches Lauderdale's vocals, which mimic George Jones' earthy, soulful style of the era. And each song is a gem, one sincere, heartbroken heartsong after another.

Lauderdale revisits older material such as "The King Of Broken Hearts," a classic weeper recorded by George Strait back in the early '90s. With pure-twang picking by old pros such as James Burton and Al Perkins, guest vocals by Patty Loveless, Lee Ann Womack and Lauderdale's pal Buddy Miller, this has the feel of the true-country faithful circling the wagons and showing the young'uns how it's done. If you like how George Jones sounded back in 1972, you're really gonna love this record. (DJ Joe Sixpack, Slipcue Guide To Country Music)

You just can't beat the consistency of the recordings by Jim Lauderdale. They always have great songs, catchy melodies, and great musicianship! This one is especially nice, because has twice as many songs as most CD's. If you like him, buy him! If you like good country songs, try him.

I'm A Happy; this CD feels a little closer to the Jim Lauderdale from his earlier days. Jim's one of the artists who's new releases (and there's many new releases by Jim!) are among the most highly anticipated record releases I seek out. He is prolific. Often putting out 2 or 3 CDs a year, guesting on CD compilations, constantly in demand as a song-writer, session playing, and touring musician, Jim is omni-present in the country, bluegrass, alt-rock and Americana worlds. How does he find the time? This CD is filled with classic country melodies and Jim actually covers a song or two and re-visits an old favorite. It never hurts that he surrounds himself with greatness, in the form of equally busy Buddy Miller, Leeann Womack and Patty Loveless. His taste is always impeccable and he surrounds himself, and surrounds excellence. I just liked this album more than recent ventures as it is full fledged country album. It's steeped in forlorn country ballads and up-tempo, toe-tapping ditties. Already among the most respected players and song-writers I follow, this is an instant favorite and among my Top 10 JL albums of all time. If you like Jim Lauderdale, you should love adding this disc to your collection of great country records. He's a Song and I'm a Happy.
