I love True Life in general. Maybe I'm just a voyeur but seeing people live their lives is fascinating and inspiring. This series is not depressing. There's always that effort to 'make it' through.

The doc begins by saying more than 2 million youth have a parent in prison. I think "True Life" follows three people usually. Here, they just do two, but one son had both parents in prison at one point.

One son is white and one son is Black. Granted, the white son visited his father regularly whereas the Black son never met his father face to face. Both mothers wanted their sons to know their fathers. However, the white mother had a debilitating disease and thus had incentive for her son to get to know his father. Here's the short of it: it could have been for a non-racial reason. But it did seem like the white father and son were gonna be okay, but the Black son seemed like he may be forever damaged.

The white father never used a cell phone and is shown riding a bicycle. He basically has a Rip van Winkle vibe going on. During a prison visit, his son basically says, "If you return to drugs, I will be done with you!" I don't blame him for laying to down some rules, even to an elder.

The Black guy belonged to a group called No More Victims, an organization for young folk who have incarcerated parents. I salute that group and the woman leader shown here mentoring this guy. At one point, you see a photo of the boy circa eight years old, smoking a cigarette while wearing a Bart Simpson T-shirt. Shocking! If you hate seeing Black male crying, then prepare to whip out the tissues while seeing this man and his half-brother. Unfortunately, this interviewee mumbled a lot and so I could absorb his words as well.

The Black guy's coverage is a bit anti-climactic. The cameras show him going to prison to visit his father, but they don't cover the meeting.

This program presents a biased view of homeschooling. It portrays homeschooling in a negative light. Was disappointed with it and would NOT recommend it.
