I like this book because it's very diverse in it's depiction of families. It has good simple language that doesn't go too deep into complex issues that may not apply to my family. However, it does mentioned that some children are adopted due to war in their birth countries. This doesn't apply to all international adoption and I think it's too big and complex an issue for the 4-8 year old group it is geared toward. I usually adapt the language to fit to my 5 yo.

Here's a basic introduction to the idea of what adoption is, and how adopted families come to be formed. The book covers both international and domestic adoption. Plenty of bright, clear photographs depict diverse children in happy families. This book should corner the market for introductory adoption books for young families and the early-education classroom for a good decade or so - at least until the photos begin to look dated. I'll recommend this for ages 2-5.

I recently ran across this book at a conference. I really thought it did a good job explaining adoption. I liked that the book had different children telling the stories of their adoption. This was a good way of stressing that every child has their own story. I didn't purchase the book because I already have the Mister Rogers book, but this has gorgeous, current photos. It would be a nice way to open up an adoption discussion with a young child.

First of all, please forgive me for not having read this book, but in searching for another book about adoption for my daughters' shelves, I was struck by the unfortunate wording in the title of this book. I thought I would share some insight into more appropriate adoption language. Today's positive adoption term is "was adopted", versus "is adopted". Once you have adopted a child, he or she is part of the family just like a biological child would be, and the process of adoption is something that has happened in the past. The fact that someone has joined his or her family through adoption need not be the thing that defines that person. More appropriate language is "he or she was adopted" rather than "he or she is adopted", and "I was adopted", rather than "I am adopted". Thanks for reading.

I love the way this book explains adoption. And the photos were amazing...esp. of the little guy who attended our center.
