Garland Jeffreys could have been a contender. He's of mixed ethnic heritage but hit the musical stage way before Mariah, Tiger, Barack and growing demographic trends made that fully acceptable. His seminal 5 star album "Ghost Writer" is an out-of-print masterpiece that ranges from Rolling Stones influenced rock ("Wild in the streets" is simply the best Stones song ever not done by the Stones) to reggae while never losing the author's own personal stamp. Absent "Ghost Writer" this is the compilation to have since it includes the best cuts from that cd--including the indispensible "Spanish town"--along with fine works from his other albums. The sound mix is very clear. So if you want to know what Garland Jeffreys is all about (and he IS still performing), let this be your introduction.

Okay, Okay, another Garland Jeffreys compliation. Been there and done that. However, if your interested in getting to know the artist and how special he was to the music scene, look no further. Having heard him all through the 70's and 80's and living outside NYC, I have always been a big fan. Jeffreys is a very special talent who has been vastly overlooked by contempoary music for the more pop and sizzle phonies. A gifted writer and performer, this CD brings it all home....
