3.0 out of 5 stars The Curse of Auto-tune
Hands down, this is one of the best collection of great, soulful songs put out by Nashville. Throughout college and grad school, this was my go to CD for long road trips home. How can you not smile while listening to Jo Dee singing Silver Thunderbird? I get kind of a lump in my throat just thinking about it.

Unfortunately, I just can't listen to album...

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR YOUR COLLECTION, December 6, 1999
This review is from: I'm Alright (Audio CD)
Jo Dee Messina has picked 10 songs that are about life and love and all that comes with it. With 3 number one songs and 2 other top 5 songs Jo Dee showcases raw emotion and strait from the heart songs that will make you smile, bring a tear to your eye and sing to the top of your lungs! "Even god must get the blues" is about the real world and all the troubles we face, it will make you stop and think. "Bye Bye" tells of a woman who's had enough and finally says...Bye Bye. This song will stay in your head long after it stops. And with up beat title track "I'm Alright" Jo Dee sings about meeting an old friend and talking about the past and saying it hasn't been easy but I'm alright. You won't be sorry when you buy this album! Not only does this album appeal to every age group, you'll listen to it over and over again! Don't think of Jo Dee as a Country music singer, think of her as an artist!

5.0 out of 5 stars Jo Dee is more than Alright, July 8, 2000
This review is from: I'm Alright (Audio CD)
I admit it, I own three copies of Jo Dee Messina's sophomore CD I'm Alright. I leave one copy in my car, another at home and the third at work. So pretty much no matter where I am during the day, Jo Dee is playing. It makes my commute so much quicker when I am imagining myself in a "Silver Thunderbird". Jo Dee has a message in "Even God Must Get the Blues", which is my fave cut, I tear up nearly every time I hear it. The message is also clear in "Stand Beside Me", because "I'm not looking for a fantasy, I want a man who stands beside me". "Because You Love Me" is a great, great ballad. Jo Dee co-wrote "No Time for Tears". I once heard Jo Dee call it an anthem album, because women were telling her that they adopted certain songs as their anthems. I like to call it my summer CD, because I like to roll all of my windows down and just crank it up. "I'm Alright", "Lesson in Leavin'", "Bye Bye", "I Know a Heartache", and "Cover Me" are all upbeat, catchy, very singable songs. When I listen to Jo Dee's music, I always have a smile on my face. I can't help it, it is GREAT stuff. This CD is a must own!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best!, March 2, 2000
This review is from: I'm Alright (Audio CD)
This is absolutely one of the best albums out there! Every single song is incredible! Jo Dee really puts her heart into every song. Many of the songs on here, including "Bye Bye", "Stand Beside Me" and "I'm Alright" were big hits for her. This album is more of the "New" country. It's not twangy. The songs have a rockin rythm and awesome acoustics! If you don't have this CD, run out and buy it NOW! It is essential to every music fan's collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Follow Up, August 23, 2002
This review is from: I'm Alright (Audio CD)
Jo Dee Messina followed up her successful 1996 debut with an even better album, 1998's I'M ALRIGHT. The album I believe to be filled with songs showing a strong woman living in the 90's. The songs range from either knowing you'll survive heartache (Bye Bye, I Know A Heartache, No Time For Tears), to surrendering (Cover Me, Because You Love Me), to affirming one's self (I'm Alright, Stand Beside Me), and more. The album was a large success, the album's first three singles (Bye Bye, I'm Alright, Stand Beside Me) all hit #1. Jo Dee covers the Dottie West hit Lesson in Leavin' which suits Jo Dee's personality perfectly, that was also a hit, but broke the chain of #1's. Because You Love Me was a very mild hit, deserved more attention. The album is a very strong sophomore effort, and should satisfy most country fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars A modern country masterpiece, July 14, 2002
This review is from: I'm Alright (Audio CD)
This is an outstanding album, which has nothing whatsoever to do with traditional country, but who cares? It contains music of the highest quality, which can be played repeatedly, and established Jo among the front rank of contemporary country queens.

Three number one singles (Bye Bye. I'm alright and Stand beside me) and a number two (Lesson in leavin', a cover of the song which gave the late Dottie West her only solo number one) show that Jo had the support of the radio stations, while album sales prove that she had the support of the public. I love all those songs.

Of the other songs, I particularly like the other oldie (I know a heartache, first recorded by Jennifer Warnes). but every track is great - there is no filler on this album. Most of the songs are upbeat, but there is the occasional slower song to provide a change of pace.

5.0 out of 5 stars Did I say I didn't really care for Country??? WRONG!!!, October 3, 1999

This review is from: I'm Alright (Audio CD)
Being someone that only dabbled in country tunes that crossed over to the pop charts, I never really thought about adding Country music to my ever growing, diverse collection of cds but...Jo Dee Messina has changed that for good!!! I heard "Bye Bye" while having a drink at a local pub and HAD to find out who sang that song...I couldn't stop tapping my feet and feeling good while this song was playing!! Once I found the song, I had to buy her cd and have NO regrets. This cd has it all...great diversity, great tunes and a great vocalist. I already know that her tune "Because You Love Me" will be one of my wedding songs. My doors are now forever open to country music..thanks Jo Dee...you're AWESOME!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars JoDee Kicks and Wails with the best of them..., March 30, 2000

This album IS Nashville--Slick recording, production to die for. If that's not enough for you, two of the top session guitarists in Music City are featured on this disc. (Brent Mason and Dann Huff) This gal has a voice too. According to the editorial reviews in the beginning of this section this album is too, what was it, "Non-twangy?" Puh-leez, guys. There's plenty of twangers out there. JoDee chose another path. It's like critisizing Coltrane because his music lacks the rigid structure of a Verdi opera. Buy this disc now. You should love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Success with a Capital S, February 21, 2001
This review is from: I'm Alright (Audio CD)
Im Alright is the long awaited sophmore release from Jo Dee Messina, who flew onto the country scene in 1996 with Heads Carolina Tails California, Your Not In Kansas Anymore, Do You Wanna Make Something Of It, etc. She made a big comeback and had a lot of success with this album. The first single Bye Bye flew to #1, then the second single Im Alright followed suit and hit #1 as well, as did the third single Stand Beside Me. The fourth single, a cover of the Dottie West song Lesson In Leavin, peaked at #2, just barely missing #1. So she had three consecutive #1 songs with this album. The fifth single Because You Love Me didnt fare as well, but is just as memorable as the others. Other mentionable tracks include the tearful Even God Must Get The Blues, the fun No Time For Tears and Silver Thunderbird, and I Know A Heartache and Cover Me, all songs on this album are excellent, there is not one bad song. This is a must have if you love country, because there is talent here. Also check out her newest album Burn, which is good too.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great listen!, July 3, 2000

My collection runs thru a huge spectrum of music. Country joined the roster 2 years ago, and Jo Dee's 2nd CD is in the highest-rotation shelf. It's not because every song is awesome, but because she puts so much of herself into the ten she's chosen to record. The "hits" are strong pieces, worth adding to any music-lover's collection, but I think the real gem is one of the tracks that didn't get released: "Silver Thunderbird." It's country, new-school style, but it's a great song, period. Something about this song just resonates with me. And that's what matters most -- not the politics of Nashville, not the pressure to sell 10 million copies -- the music on the CD. This CD has great music; definitely a treat to add to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars How Could A Country Album Be Better?, February 27, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: I'm Alright (Audio CD)
Ms. Messina is a tremendous talent and something about her work seems so sincere. You really feel like the album was put together to entertain the listener rather than to just make money. "Stand Beside Me" and "Because You Love Me" are just awesome songs, and this album has a total of five or six hits on it. You have to get both of her albums if you haven't already. She should be on the level of Martina, Faith, and Shania before long.
