Dirty, Grimy Silliness,
By Wantz Upon A Time Reviews (Chicago) - See all my reviews
This review is from: I'm Dirty! (Hardcover)
A back-end loader has a big job to do. It starts the day sparkling clean--until it has to remove the garbage from an otherwise empty lot. The lot is very dirty, and the dirt gets all over the back-end loader as it hauls the trash away. Once the lot is cleaned up and smoothed out, one look at the back-end loader will send kids into fits of giggles.
Simple phrasing and catchy illustrations provide a silly time for young children. Although not high on educational content, the book has a countdown from ten to one (i.e.: one broken washer). Children who love dirt and grime will enjoy this picture book for its silliness. Other children may be ambivalent. My four-year-old daughter was mildly entertained but not very interested, while a friend's boy of the same age absolutely loved it--proving the book's appeal is on a very individual basis. Overall, it's a nice picture book and good for a silly story. Christina Wantz Fixemer 8/15/2006

Runner-up to I Stink!,
By Jason Kirkfield "The Pride and Sorrow of chil... (Purple Mountains Majesty) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: I'm Dirty! (Hardcover)
Most of the people who enjoyed 2002's I Stink! will naturally gravitate to this 2006 sequel. I'm Dirty! is a fun book most kids should love, though it is not the classic its older brother has become.
The backhoe seems friendlier than the trash truck but I am not convinced that makes the story better. Also, the 10 to 1 countdown is both less fun and less educational than the original's alphabet soup. Still, I'm Dirty! teaches the importance of hard work, and of actually enjoying it. So add this to your collection--in addition to (but not instead of) I Stink!--and have a dirty day!

I bought this book for a children's lit. class and I have to say I am so glad I got it. My son is 2, which is another reason I picked this one out of a list, and he loves it too. He loves tractors or anything of the sort and this is just right up his ally. And the illustrations are great, the book is worded so that you sound out noises, and there is some counting in it too. Highly recommended!

This book was bought after my then 3 year old son fell in love with I Stink. He likes it and wants it read frequently, but will still choose the first one over this one. I would get I Stink first and follow up with this one. (My kindergarten students feel the same way!)

I gave "I'm Dirty" 3 stars only because it fell short compared to its brother "I Stink".However, this is still a very cute book , especially if your little one liked "I stink", they will equally like this new edition.
This book follows the playful job of a backhoe loader. The writing style is very similar to "I Stink" , but it does not have as much attention to detail or storyline mixed in with all the funny catch phrases. While I stink takes you through the alphabet Im dirty takes you through numbers 1-10 while cleaning up the dirty lot. Although I was excited and would have expected a little bit more after reading I stink, I would still recommend Im dirty .If your chiled LOVED I Stink then they will LOVE this one as well.

Of course, your little ones are going to love laughing at this book. It is a hoot, with great vocabulary. And the great vocabulary (chompers, hydraulic, specialized, fractured, scuffed, stabilizer, stance) is your ticket to fun with bigger kids, too. Between the sensational adjectives and the onomatopoeia, your big kids can have a couple of language arts lessons on the book. Plus, the backhoe is fun to draw and the style is easy to emulate. I had my fourth grader (who does not like to write) do a project where he drew a similar backhoe trying to clean up a familiar household mess. He got a kick out of the book, and he did fine on the project. He would rather do projects than homework, any day.

Another Trashy Triumph by the McMullans,
By Shanna A. Gonzalez "eyelevelbooks.com" (Gaithersburg, MD) - See all my reviews
This review is from: I'm Dirty! (Hardcover)
The McMullan team serve up another trashy triumph, somehow making griminess funny, even to adults. Just like the garbage truck in I Stink, this Backhoe Loader reports for duty, describing his impressive qualities, then proceeds to clean up the garbage lot. Instead of going through the alphabet, he counts downward from ten while cleaning up "10 torn-up truck tires, 9 fractured fans, and similar items down to "1 wonky washing machine." He then demonstrates how to remove a stump and fill in the hole with mud, which he accomplishes while declaring with relish, "This lot's cleaned up. And me? I'm DIRTY."This punchy, exuberant story expresses a deep delight in the pleasures of hard work, as well as fulfilling the fantasy of every frustrated, mud-loving preschooler in the world. It's available in limited quantities in audio format (try your public library), and in a new DVD version along with I Stink.I'm Dirty & I Stink

Send It Back,
By Satsuki Rebel (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: I'm Dirty! (Hardcover)
This book gets 2 stars for effort. The pictures are fine but the text leaves a lot to be desired. I don't know how it got so many good reviews. There's no story to it. As far as I could tell it was a bunch of two word questions followed by nonsensical answers and noises. I honestly can't even give a better description than that. This book was a pile of rubbish.
