Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

With a “Vrrrrrrrrrrrrrrum,” a red sports car challenges a train engine to a race. But first the train loads lumber on the flatcar, bricks in the gondola, steel on the coil car, gas in the tank car, and gravel in the hopper. Once the engine builds up speed, there is no stopping him. He takes tunnels through mountains and warns cows off the track. Even city traffic (including the red car) halts while he chugs to his destination. The mighty engine politely offers the sports car a ride back. On the checkerboard endpapers and throughout the story, the engine is Mr. Personality: big, confident, and friendly. The text moves along in a satisfying way, though interruptions can be expected, as kids stop the action to identify the cars and their contents again and again. Featuring big, bold images, the artwork creates a strong thrust from left to right in nearly every scene while adding plenty of variation and visual interest along the way. Train fans will love this. Preschool-Grade 1. --Carolyn Phelan

Review

“The staccato text is as peppy as always and embellished with onomatopoeia like the “chooka chooka chooka” rhythm the train makes once up and running. Jim McMullan makes terrific use of the broad horizontal spreads to show the beauty and challenge of the journey.” (The Horn Book)

“Certain to pique the interest and imagination of young children as to the everyday workings of freight trains—and it takes them on a highly entertaining ride, too.” (School Library Journal)

“It’s a rip-roaring ride.” (Publishers Weekly)

Praise for I’M BIG!: ““It’s unlikely the dino or readers will soon forget such a big adventure.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))

Praise for I’M BIG!: “Perfect as a read-aloud or a read-alone, this story about a lost youngster finding his courage and his mojo will secure a welcome place in the vast herd of picture books available.” (School Library Journal (starred review))

Praise for I’M BIG!: “Looking big is a strategy used often in the wild, and readers will be happy to see it work for this essentially gentle giant, from whom the fanged, clawed, spiked, yet puny bullies turn tail.” (The Horn Book)

This was the 5th McMullan book from this series that we own, and my least favorite so far, although it is still a good addition to the set. The fact that we own 5 should say a lot about how much we love the author/illustrator team, and perhaps if we didn't love the others so much I would give this a better rating. The biggest thing that stands out to me that this book is lacking is an attention getting beginning and a clear and concise ending. I found myself looking for the "who am I?" beginning and ending pages that the others have. This seems like an obvious oversight in my opinion, as this identifying theme seems critical to the overall tone of these books. I literally kept checking the first and last pages to see if maybe the pages were stuck as it seemed too abrupt on either end and it took me a few minutes to realize that this aspect was missing. My two year old likes this book, but did not take to it immediately like he did with the others, and it took some convincing and several somewhat forced reads before he began to get into it. He is extremely drawn to the "role call" page that labels each train car, and to be honest would probably be happy just going to that page and reading off the train car names over and over. This page is in theme with similar pages from the other stories that either "count" or "label" and is a fun and appropriate concept for toddlers (ex-the "alphabet soup" pages in "I Stink", and "counting down what I'm cleaning up" from I'm Dirty.) Over all, the train and car characters are only moderately likable and are less expressive than McMullan's other characters, although the illustrations are in the same great style which is so obviously a big part of the success of all of these books. I think that the interaction between the car and train could be better too.Read more ›

The McMullans are great picture book illustrators and wonderful wordsmiths and story tellers! I bought I'm Fast! and I'm Dirty!, because my 4 year old grand-nephew loved I Stink! They were instant winners. They are a delight to read and to hear. They are also very informative, and they lead to meaningful conversations, without being preach-y. The males in my sister's family have always loved car racing, especially sports cars -- this books has no intentions to rain on that parade. What it does do is give a young person who loves the Thomas train stories an introduction into fast, dirty, stinky 21 Century USA reality.

My 3 yo loves this book since it has 2 of his favorite things: train and trucks. We read it many times. The story is very cute, friendly and the drawings are very realistic. Highly recommended.

Kate and Jim McMullan are a wonderful author/illustrator team. My son and I have collected all the books in the series, and we love them! As an educator, I especially like the use of varied sizes, styles and colors of text, showing kids what expression really means. As a parent, I never tire of these books.

He loves all the books by Kate McMullen, beginning with "I StinK". This one is especially great for him because it makes mention of Chicago and we live in Chicago. He loves trains and race cars and the rhymes are quite nice. One we read over and over again without growing tired.

I bought this for my 3 1/2 year old son. He loves this book-- it has lasted past the first week, always a good sign. (He also loves I'm Dirty and, all time fave, I'm Stinky.) Nice illustrations, good rhythm to the words. Will probably buy any others we don't already own...

All the little sound effects add to the pacing of the story, all while covering the basic kinds of cars you can see on a freight train. Lots of wonderful details that my two-year old loves to point out and following along with.

The McMullan books are always fun to read to the grandchildren. The illustrations offer new so many things to talk about each time. And what young child isn't fascinated by trains and fast cars. A truly winning combination.
