Spanning the genres...,

This album is a masterpiece. Eric Martin has dared to expand his musical scope, and the result is a hard-rocking, and frequently breathtaking collection of songs. Personally, I would tag this album as the most definitive release of Mr. Martin's career. It encompasses his work with Mr. Big, his previous solo efforts, yet also ventures into new territories. Prepare yourselves for a lengthy review folks. :)I'll start with the overall presentation/packaging. The booklet is first-class, and includes lyrics for all 13 tracks (including the Japanese bonus section!), band member names/duties, as well as the standard list of song-writing credits, additional players and "thank you's." There are also plenty of pictures of Eric, and the actual insert is sturdy and higher in quality than your typical U.S. release. I think it goes without saying that Eric is in top form here. He effortlessly handles each track, from soul-injected numbers like Bigger Man to the metal-tinged opening cut (My Disease). However, just as impressive is the band backing him. Each member's performance assisted in making this record strong, consistent and instantly memorable. I also wanted to touch on the songwriting briefly. I've always found Eric Martin/Andre Pessis-penned songs to be among the best on any of Mr. Big's releases, and this duo has proven that they haven't lost their magic. I vehemently disagree with the other reviewer of this CD regarding the lyrical content on "GS." I also think the oftentimes bland and passionless ditties by Dianne Warren are best left to Air Supply and Chicago (great bands that have given up on expanding their careers)... just my two cents. My personal track-by-track synopsis of this "don't miss" sonic experience... - My Disease: This seems to be the undisputed favorite of many reviewers. The track's groove is infectious, and the overall "feel" of the track is heavy. In fact, it's one of the heaviest Eric has ever recorded. Personally, I love the bass tone and drum fills, which stand out particularly during the musical interlude that segues the bridge. Though crunchy and almost nu-metalesque at times, it retains its' melodic nature. A fantastic way to start this album! If you enjoy Eric Martin's previous work (solo or with Mr. Big), and are able to get into different genres of music, you will be pleased and impressed by this record. "Goin' Sane" fits easily into the present ever-changing musical climate, and would be a fine addition (highlight) to anyone's cd collection. - Adam

One of Rock N Roll's greatest singers goes slumming!,

Eric Martin's _I'm Goin' Sane_ is a disappointingly flat album. Eric's voice is still in very fine form, and the album has fine glossy modern sounding musicianship and production effects; but he kind of let the quality of the songs/songwriting slide on this album. The best songs are "My Disease", "Spaceman", "Bigger Man", and "Everyday"; but they are more or less B-minus level songs, and still pretty far away from the kind of A-level hits that Eric Martin needs if he's going to sustain a career as a Rock N Roll singer. If he doesn't have any more success writing songs for his next album than he did for this one, he should consider working with some professional ghost-songwriters like Desmond Child or Dianne Warren, or perhaps covering and updating some oldies that no one has covered for ten or fifteen years. Another thing I found a little bit disappointing was that I kind of figured after Mr. Big broke up EM might go back to the more R&B based style of rock that he did before Mr. Big, but the style of _I'm Goin' Sane_ is basically Mr. Big's style only done solo. To give him his due though, Eric Martin really does have one of the best singing voices in Rock N Roll; he just needs some better songs to put it to use in.

Quality journeymans 2nd solo offering,

Eric Martin is a bit of a journeyman, and I say that knowing that the term is often a derogatory one. But in the case of Eric Martin I feel that it grants him a certain aura of honesty and integrity in that regardless of his commercial fortunes he just keeps on plugging away doing what he does.
On this album Martins pipes are in fine form whether he's rockin' out on numbers like the blazing and somewhat dark lyrically My Disease or the upbeat Spaceman and Goin' Sane. And to those uncertain as to whether or not to buy this album I'd recommend trying to listen to a sample of the three aforementioned tracks that form the opening triptych of tunes. This is because they encapsulate so much of what this album is about. Brash, bright tunes that scoot along nicely without any real reason to be, but such is their breezy rockin' outlook on life it's just impossible to begrudge these songs their existence. Numbers such as the up-vibe though plaintive Marie add colour to proceedings while a touch of funk infuses There Goes The Neighbourhood and the self questioning Bigger Man and Who Am I Supposed to Be are pleasant even when courting more serious issues and that really is the gentle charm of this collection of no frills rock songs. Far mellower than the majority of my collection I have to say that this light hearted album hits my stereo more often than other releases that may be considered it's competition by other hard rock front mans` solo albums. And by that I mean fellows like Joey Tempest and Mike Tramp both of whom have put out solo albums that have satisfied but not in the way Martin has achieved here. Not world altering but this nicely put together package, and given the mildly amusing cover art it is a package, I found this album a pleasant surprise in just the same way I found myself won over with shameless ease when Martins tour passed through Sydney in 2007. |
