The Coca-Cola Girl is Back, and She's Better Than Ever,
By "dodgers1203" (Kelseyville, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: I'm Just a Girl (Audio CD)
The Coca-Cola girl is back, and she's better than ever. After going through the harsh transition between Capitol and Arista, not to mention a divorce, Deana Carter is back. Her new album contains 12 new tracks, combining the country-pop sound of her first album, and the more traditional sound of her second album. The tracks of the album are as follows :1) I'm Just A Girl - The title track of the album, and probably a future release. Should it be released it will probably climb the charts. A great song! 2) There's No Limit - Her current single which is climbing up the charts. With the sexy video to go with it, it should climb to #1. 3) You & Tequila - A very emotional song about drinking and its affect on the lives of others. One of the better ballads on the album. 4) Me & The Radio - The best song on the Cd. A simple song about leaving life behind. A possible single. 5) Cover of a Magazine - An uptempo song about how the world sees you. Very good. 6) Wildflower - A very relaxing song, but just OK. 7) Twice As Worth It - Another song about love, but than again just OK. 8) Eddie - Another one of the great song's on the CD. A very uptempo song about finding love in a gas station. :) 9) Waiting - Deana's first ever duet. She sings the emotional ballad about love, with Dwight Yoakam, a close friend. Another possible single. 10) Liar - An uptempo song about being cheated. Just listen to the chorus. :) 11) Goodbye Train - Another one of my personal favorites. Could do very well on radio. 12) Girl's Night - It's a rock song, so watch out!

I loved Deana Carter's last 2 CD's, and was excited to get "I'm Just a Girl", but...what happened? The songs are just flat out disappointing, except for There's No Limit. No surprise that No Limit was the radio single released to hype the CD before it became available. But nothing else on the album sounds like There's No Limit. The first song, "I'm Just a Girl", is okay - but pretty bubblegum poppish and she keeps singing about a back seat in a Corvette - doesn't exist! (Just a mild annoyance.) The third track, "You and Tequila" is a downer, but Matraca Berg has songwriting credit here so it's good. The album falls apart after the first 3 songs. Some of it is truly unbearable ("Girls Night Out") but most is just forgettable. Hope her next effort is back up to speed.

Solid "B" grade for Carter,

She won't ever top Did I Shave My Legs For This - its sounds like Carter is trying to enter pop music, but honey, you are country! I like the fact that she wrote a few songs on this album on her own, so she is getting better. Cover of a Magazine and Wildflower are my particular favorites. I'd buy it if you are a Deana Carter fan - wouldn't recommend it for somebody that is new to Carter's music.

Good Album. Favorite song on this album is "There's No Limit". This song is one I'll put on all my country compilations I burn for the forseeable future.

Fine pop from former country chart-topper,

Carter has never seemed comfortable with the lightning bolt of country music stardom that accompanied her debut release, "Did I Shave My Legs For This?" Though her contributions to that album showed off her genetically inherited country music lineage, her follow-up LPs have played more to her childhood pop and rock influences. Her second album, 1998's "Everything's Gonna Be Alright," was broader and earthier, with plenty of Southern Rock influences that didn't impress country radio, and led to her departure from Capitol.
A 2001 one-off for Rounder found the singer dueting with her father (guitarist Fred Carter, Jr.) on a lovely, stripped-down set of Christmas songs, and in 2003 she resurfaced on Arista for this slick CD that pushes even further towards highly-produced pop. Listeners who insist on viewing Carter as a Country artist - even of the contemporary Nashville stripe - are likely to be disappointed. The innocence that made "Strawberry Wine" a hit is still to be heard in Carter's Southern voice, but the songs (all written or co-written by Carter) and production are contemporary pop, verging on bubblegum. Her third release isn't nearly as consistent as her first two. The album's first single, "No Limit," and the lead-off title-track are ear-candy of the first-order, with deftly doubled vocals, arena-sized electric guitars and memorable melodic hooks. Carter sings of American pleasures so stereotyped that, much like their recitation in a Beach Boys song, they fly past clichéd to touching. Dan Huff's production is polished, but with interesting touches such as the dischordant electric guitar and strummed introducing "Me and the Radio." The social commentary of "Cover of a Magazine" provides an ironic counterpoint to the Sixteen Magazine-styled CD art, and Carter provides a sweet, girlish balance to Dwight Yoakam's emotional wail on their co-written "Waiting." The power-pop "Liar" features memorable sunshine-pop touches, and "Goodbye Train" has the earthy lyrical and vocal hallmarks of its co-writer, Matraca Berg. The frenetic modern-rock production of the closer, "Girls Night Out," can't disguise its pale rhythmic imitation of Jim Carroll's "People Who Died," with half-baked lyrics and a repetitive chorus that doesn't really bear repeating. Despite the pop potential of this release, Carter's been pigeonholed as a Nashville artist, and little here was going to fly high on country radio. It's a shame, because there's some excellent adult pop here, with a freshness and energy not found often in either L.A. or New York. [©2006 hyperbolium dot com]

I really liked the songs there's no limit and I'm just a girl but the rest of the cd is crap. She definately is not a true country singer (she listens to rap music, stated in an interview). One reviewer stated that the cd has a video of there's no limit, this is untrue. One of the reasons I bought this cd was because I thought the video was on it. Not so! If you like a variety of music you may like it, but if you are a true country fan like me I believe you will be let down.

Fresh New Music From Deana Carter!,
By Maren Cuykendall (Coralville, IA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: I'm Just a Girl (Audio CD)
It has been 4 years since Deana Carter's last studio album. Many have been waiting, not so patiently, for new music from Deana. This album is worth that long wait. Full of exciting, original, and fresh new tunes all written or co-written by Deana herself. It is rare today to see an artist stand out like Deana has. She has her own sound and her sweet voice is unmistakeable. In a music industry today where most acts sound the same, Deana brings her audience some freshness with unique songwriting and a lovely voice. This album is uplifting, has some dark moments, has some laughs, and ultimately makes the listener fall in love with Deana's talent. "I'm Just A Girl" is Deana's testament to being an all-American girl. It's a lovely tune, perfect for a summer day. "There's No Limit", her current single has the same fresh feeling about falling in love and the highs that go along with that feeling. "You and Tequila", "Waiting", and "Me and the Radio" are all darker utnes written about heartbreak. Yet, these are not your average heartbreak songs, they have such uniqueness in the lyrics, that the listener is captured by the feelings these songs convey. "Liar" is perhaps the most fun song on the album. Though it is about a cheater, liar, loser, and leaver it displays an upbeat feeling and shows Deana's lighter side. Perhaps my personal favorite on this album is called "Twice As Worth It", a song about someone's flaws, but how they are still perfect in the eyes of the one that loves them. The infectious "Girls' Night" closes the album and this tune will s how just how unuqie Deana really is. Get this album, it is definitely Deana's best work. IT's nice to have this kind of freshness and originality in an inudsty that all too often sounds bland and similar. Deana stands out, and she stands on her own.

WELCOME BACK DEANA!!!,

This review is from: I'm Just a Girl (Audio CD)
On her first new studio and non-holiday themed album since 1998's far underrated and unnoticed EVERTHING'S GONNA BE ALRIGHT, Deana is back with an album full of uptemo cute numbers and emotional ballads. From the cute and playful pop-country tune I'M JUST A GIRL to the sensual first single THERE'S NO LIMIT....the album starts off on a high note! It then shifts into the emotional ballad YOU AND TEQUILA about love gone wrong to the theme song of the album (see cover art and insert) COVER MAGAZINE (a fun uptempo playful number) to the great ending songs GOODBYE TRAIN and GIRL'S NIGHT.....this album is just a real pleasure from start to finish....the only thing I had wished for is some more ballads in her sweet girlish voice....but maybe next time...but this album does reflect the happy place she is in now and that is MOST IMPORTANT.....way to go! *Note-WAITING is a duet with Dwight Yoakam....also Deana wrote or co-wrote every track!!!!!*

Just Deana,

Deana Carter is back with a new album, IM JUST A GIRL, and its great that she is back. I missed her unique music and spirit in country music, and it's good to see there is some good airplay for the album's first single, "There's No Limit". The album is her first in 4 and a half years, since her second album was released in 1998, which didn't fare too well for her sadly. She went through a divorce, and a label change, which is why this album took so long she once explained in an interview. The album has a reminiscent feel to her first album, as well as new elements, there is more of a rock element to the music. The album opens with the title track, a fun piece of country-pop heaven, would make an excellent summer single. Then there is the current single, "There's No Limit", which is a fun uptempo song about devotion and love, I love the guitar solo in the break as well as Deana's warm vocals. "You & Tequila" is one of the better ballads of the album, about the negative effects of alcohol. "Me And The Radio" is a must single, excellent ballad. "Cover of a Magazine" is a fun uptempo song, but its very true, about how fickle society can be and just wanting a taste of what other people live like. I enjoy "Wildflower", its a nice ballad/midtempo that suits her vocals well. "Twice As Worth it" has some unique instrumentation I quite enjoy. "Eddie" is another fun uptempo summer love song. "Waiting" is a surprise, her first duet, and its with Dwight Yoakam. You have to hear it to believe it. "Liar" is a rock edged uptempo song. "Goodbye Train" is one of my favorites on the album, another potential single, this one was written with Matraca Berg. The album closes with the rocker "Girl's Night" which is interesting and unique, a nice closer. Overall, I am enjoying Deana's new music quite a bit. It's good to see she still has a place in country music, and that people haven't forgotten about her, because she is a true talent in the industry.
