5.0 out of 5 stars Check your religion at the door!, February 21, 2008
This review is from: I'm Killing My Sacred Cows (Paperback)
Some people let their religion get in the way of their Christianity. If that statement makes any sense to you, then you will love Joy Calkins' book, I'M KILLING MY SACRED COWS. If that statement makes no sense to you at all, then this book may not be for you.

Calkins says, "Sacred cows are religious spirits that love to interpret scripture." Unfortunately for them and those whom they spread their sacred cowiness upon, their interpretations are wrong. Follow Joy Calkins through her struggle not just with overcoming disease, but with overcoming the sacred cows her religious friends and "leaders" were subjecting her to. Find out how she overcame her sacred cows, killed them, and found the Christian path to the healing grace she was looking for.

You'll enjoy her quick wit and total disregard for political correctness, that is, unless you're touchy about such things. If you are, then you might want to consider killing that sacred cow while you're at it.

The editor in me will not allow me close the review without letting you know, there are some editorial errors, but not enough to distract from the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A refreshing look at "spiritual cows", February 29, 2008

This review is from: I'm Killing My Sacred Cows (Paperback)
Joy Calkins knows all about the ravages of disease, since she has suffered from a wide variety of maladies. She also knows first-hand about the slings and arrows which other Christians can throw at a person going through serious illness. Well-meaning friends, when trying to minister to an ill person, can often make things worse by throwing around Scripture which is innacurately interpreted or inappropriately used to prove a point. Joy calls these ill-fated attempts to minister "Sacred Cows". For instance, she uses the "Paul's Thorn Cow" as an example of Christians who incorrectly or incompletely interpret Scripture to mean that God chooses not to heal people because He doesn't want to. She puts an interesting interpretation on this Scripture, as she does several others. She details the spiritual changes she has made in her life which have helped to ease, and in some cases, cure some of the many illnesses she has faced. Christians with debilitating diseases may find comfort and direction in Joy Calkins spiritual journeys and the conclusions she has drawn.

Joy is honest, to the point and light hearted. She carefully explains each cow, its damaging effect if we allow it AND the solution. She uses very personal examples to explain the issues and show the results.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this Book, July 7, 2008

As one (Janelle) who has suffered from multiple chemical senstivity for the last 22 years, this book is a breath of fresh air (as well as being scripturlly sound)! I have endured every one of the sacred cow false answers to being sick that Joy Calkins has, and its about time somebody showed them up for what they are--lies from the devil. It was also very refreshing to read that she has been healed of this horrible thing, gives one great hope.
