Proto-Rockabilly from a Country Great!, August 12, 2005
This review is from: I'm Little, But I'm Loud - Gonna Shake This Shack Tonight (Audio CD)
Little Jimmy Dickens is famous for his comic tunes like the country fried "Out Behind the Barn," "Take an Old Cold Tater," and "Sleepin At the Foot of the Bed." He could also deliver some solid weepers like "We Could" and "Raggedy Ann." Plus bizarro tracks like "May the Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose." OK, so the man is diverse, but this set focuses on his upbeat driving proto-rockabilly tunes from the 1950s. Jimmy's vocals are great but what really wows you is the hot band he has. These guys cook and serve up some tasty licks. If you enjoy hard rocking 1950s country flavored tunes, this is a great CD. Most of the cuts weren't hits and aren't the first songs that come to mind with Dickens (like the ones mentioned above) but they are all entertaining. For the musician, there is much to ponder in Tater's band.
