3 and up

I'm a pig, I'm a pig,
and I'm happy as a clam
that I'm not an armadillo
or a lion
or a lamb.

Happy Pig proclaims the joys of life in this ode to piggies everywhere. Whether she is oinking at the moon or wallowing in the mud, it's easy to see why a pig is the absolutely perfect thing to be!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2–As she frolics round the countryside, a joyful pig radiates positive self-esteem: "I am simply tickled pink/to be exactly what I am." Weeks's songwriter background shines throughout, and Berry's humorous, clever illustrations enhance the deceptively simple narrative. For example, opposite the text proclaiming how smart pigs are, the young porker is depicted in graduation garb. When hunting truffles in the woods, the Eiffel Tower is seen in the background. A piggy bank resides on the shelf in the bedroom. And when this little creature wallows in the mud, it is in a Roman-style bath. All in all, this is one happy porker. A must for those looking for books on self-esteem, and just plain fun for everyone else.–Robin L. Gibson, formerly at Perry County District Library, New Lexington, OH

My husband liked this one so much we're adding it to our library. The moral of the book is to be content with and proud of who you are no matter what. "I'm a pig. I'm a pig. And I don't give a fig, if you call me a pig cause that's what I am." What a great 1st line :-)

4.0 out of 5 stars Jump for joy, December 5, 2006
This review is from: I'm a Pig (Hardcover)
Sarah Weeks presents the reader with a young pig that is absolutely overjoyed to be a pig. The reader follows the young pig as it shows off all the fun pig activities it can do including sniffing out truffles near the Eiffel Tower, rolling around in the mud in a swanky Roman bath and oinking at the moon. This uplifting story stresses esteem and ability. Repetitive and rhythmic, the story never becomes redundant. In addition to tying in perfectly with the text, Holly Berry's illustrations will enhance the read-aloud experience for many young preschool audiences through the power of their many cute and delightful details. A definite must for pig lovers young and old alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous and fun, June 27, 2005

This review is from: I'm a Pig (Library Binding)
My two year old received this book as a gift and loves it. The text is quick and light for on-the-go toddlers and the illustrations are wonderfully detailed and comical. My daughter points out objects from the multiple scenes (beach, Irish countryside, truffle hunting), so it's an opportunity to interact and learn. It's a playful, joyful book with a wonderful underlying message about self-esteem.
