I'm Safe! at the Mall is a colorful storybook with reusable stickers that helps children know what to do if they get separated from their parents in a public place. As children follow the adventures of a puppy character named Kip, they learn not to panic, to stay where they are, and how to identify a low-risk adult who can help. The book offers an alternative to "stranger danger" teaching by providing a positive, "not scary" approach based on principles promoted by early childhood experts and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The storybook gets children involved as they help Kip find low risk adults in an entertaining mall scene. A page of learning activities at the back of the book provides opportunities for more reinforcement and fun. Plus, a child can use the reusable stickers to create his or her own story, or simply try to match the stickers to parts of the illustrations in the book. The companion I'm Safe! at the Mall Activity Book, ISBN 1-891596-01-2, provides drawings to color, puppets to cut out and use in role-plays, and additional activities that reinforce safety learning.
