Normally I round my 1/2 ratings down because I figure if you didn't earn 4 stars, I'm not going to give it. This album I rounded up because of the players and the fact that my gripe is mainly with the production of the album. Trudy Lynn is great and Calvin Owens is "the man". The songs are good, performances good, players are some of the best around. My problem is that the production is to "smooth". There are times that this brilliant horn section ends up sounding like horn samples on a synthasizer. I love a big band when I can hear the big band. Here, because of the production, there's not enough definition of the individuals left. I understand that when you're part of a section, it's the section that's supposed to be heard as opposed to the individual. That being said, what's the point in having 4 trumpets if you're only going to hear a "trumpet wash" as opposed to four trumpets?
