Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS–A lighthearted, clever story presented in an oversize, colorful package. A bright blue giant squid cruises through the ocean, proudly noting that he is bigger than all the creatures he encounters. From shrimp to shark, he repeats his refrain, I'm bigger than…, sounding remarkably similar to a three-year-old cheerfully cataloging his world. Briefly dismayed when swallowed by a voracious whale (who has also swallowed up everyone else whole including the shark), the squid rallies by noting, I'm the biggest thing in this whale! This buoyant tale, filled with nonthreatening cartoonish denizens of the deep blue (and turquoise and green) sea, makes no effort to be realistic or educational but just simple fun, which is its charm. (Note the squid on the back cover proudly stating that he is bigger than the bar code.) –Susan Moorhead, New Rochelle Public Library, NY

Review

"Waves of exuberance flow out of this crowd-pleaser, in which a squid proudly points out how much bigger it is than any shrimp, clam, octopus or fish in the neighborhood."

—Kirkus Reviews, starred review

“Sherry renders his hero and habitat in bright colors and bold, simple shapes that will be surefire eye magnets for preschoolers….”

5.0 out of 5 stars My Kids Loved This Book! May 10, 2007
Format:Hardcover
My four and six year old children loved this book! They laughed out loud as each page was turned. The drawings are simple, clear and colorful with happy, friendly sea creatures. The giant squid is a likable character who is proud to be the biggest thing in the ocean. When the unexpected happens, it goes with the flow and makes the best of its new situation. The bonus bathtub clings were also a huge hit with my kids. They have them all over the tub and are now creating their own versions of this wonderful story. This new author /illustrator is talented and one I want to watch!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book May 23, 2007
Format:Hardcover
I am a teacher and a mother of three young children (a 4 yr old girl and twin 3 yr old boys). My three loved this book and had me read it over and over again. They laugh out loud each time we read it. I can even see it being used in the classroom - having young children write their own book and being, "The biggest thing in their world". I loved this author's concept and hope he has many more to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars funny June 7, 2008

Format:Hardcover
this is about a giant squid who goes around the ocean showing us how he's bigger than everything, and you can tell he's really proud of this fact, in a fun way. then a whale comes behind him and eats him in all of his glory and he's shocked for a second. but then he looks around at all of the other animals in the whale and then proclaims happily that he's the biggest thing in the whale. it's an optimistic book about a squid who happy with who he is enough to see how he's great no matter the situation. it's short, but it's good to read out loud and has bright, colourful pictures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great children's book
read it to my class - and to school children in China. They can relate to wanting to be biggest and best, but finding competition - and then maintaining a healthy self-esteem.
