Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS–A lighthearted, clever story presented in an oversize, colorful package. A bright blue giant squid cruises through the ocean, proudly noting that he is bigger than all the creatures he encounters. From shrimp to shark, he repeats his refrain, I'm bigger than…, sounding remarkably similar to a three-year-old cheerfully cataloging his world. Briefly dismayed when swallowed by a voracious whale (who has also swallowed up everyone else whole including the shark), the squid rallies by noting, I'm the biggest thing in this whale! This buoyant tale, filled with nonthreatening cartoonish denizens of the deep blue (and turquoise and green) sea, makes no effort to be realistic or educational but just simple fun, which is its charm. (Note the squid on the back cover proudly stating that he is bigger than the bar code.) –Susan Moorhead, New Rochelle Public Library, NY

Review

"Waves of exuberance flow out of this crowd-pleaser, in which a squid proudly points out how much bigger it is than any shrimp, clam, octopus or fish in the neighborhood."

Now, at one year old, it is her absolute favorite book, and we read it every day, sometimes multiple times a day.

My four and six year old children loved this book! They laughed out loud as each page was turned. The drawings are simple, clear and colorful with happy, friendly sea creatures. The giant squid is a likable character who is proud to be the biggest thing in the ocean. When the unexpected happens, it goes with the flow and makes the best of its new situation. The bonus bathtub clings were also a huge hit with my kids. They have them all over the tub and are now creating their own versions of this wonderful story. This new author /illustrator is talented and one I want to watch!

I am a teacher and a mother of three young children (a 4 yr old girl and twin 3 yr old boys). My three loved this book and had me read it over and over again. They laugh out loud each time we read it. I can even see it being used in the classroom - having young children write their own book and being, "The biggest thing in their world". I loved this author's concept and hope he has many more to come.

This is a daily read for my 2 and 5 year-old boys. "Big in the Ocean", as my little guy calls it, is a wonderful book: a simple but compelling story, a great lesson, lots of little creatures to count, and good practice for beginning readers. Both boys adore the book, and the 5 year-old oftens reads it to his brother. Together they count shrimp, clams and fish, whisper when the shark appears, and giggle with glee at the end. They love it so much, I'm buying another copy for their school!

The clings look like fun, but would probably end up in the 2 YO's mouth, so I'll hold off using for a year.

this is about a giant squid who goes around the ocean showing us how he's bigger than everything, and you can tell he's really proud of this fact, in a fun way. then a whale comes behind him and eats him in all of his glory and he's shocked for a second. but then he looks around at all of the other animals in the whale and then proclaims happily that he's the biggest thing in the whale. it's an optimistic book about a squid who happy with who he is enough to see how he's great no matter the situation. it's short, but it's good to read out loud and has bright, colourful pictures.

My 2-year-old has gone nuts for this book. The story is wonderfully understandable and the art is fantastic. And for $16.99 (list) you get color, a gatefold, and best of all--bathtub stickies!

Illustrations, limited text, and story line make this perfect for three and four year olds! Subtle, but good lesson can be learned.

The giant squid is big. Very big.

She's very proud of how big she is. She even thinks that she's the biggest thing in the ocean - bigger than shrimp, clams, and crabs. Even bigger than jellyfish, turtles, and octopodes.

But she's forgotten that everything has to eat and that even giant squid have predators. Along comes a sperm whale and gobbles her up. Now worries though, optimist that she is, the squid realizes that she's the biggest thing in the whale!

Kevin Sherry's delightfully playful I'm the Biggest Thing in the Ocean is a delightful read. The pictures are cute and they're even anatomically correct (no eyes on these clams). Packed with humor, this is a fantastic board book for your toddler (or your favorite marine biologist) to explore beautiful art and relative sizes.

This review and more like it available on my blog, Bibliopapa.

The one thing that's bigger than this giant squid is his super-sized ego. The squid boasts his way through the entirety of this comical book. Even when he gets outdone, he finds a way to spin it!

In the squid, author/illustrator Kevin Sherry might have just created the world's most endearing braggart. With its simple, yet funny words, "I'm the Biggest Thing in the Ocean" was a book that my daughter wanted to read again and again and again. Your kid will probably agree.
