Editorial Reviews

Honky Tonks, Truckers And Tears, Ace's first volume of Red Sovine's classic Starday recordings, was something of a surprise best seller for us as a new release in 2005. It continues to sell well and has prompted customer inquiries as to when well be releasing a second volume. Here it is at last.

Those who only know Red for his posthumous UK #1 Teddy Bear will find that there's a lot more to him and his music once they sample I'm The Man.

Unlike its predecessor, which featured many of the classic recitations that gave Red some of his biggest hits, our second helping of Red Sovine offers nothing but hard-core country songs drawn from over a decade's worth of Starday singles.

As well as numerous fine songs exclusive to his catalogue, I'm The Man also features Red's excellent take on classics from the catalogues of George Jones, Roy Drusky, Charlie Rich, Moon Mullican, the Delmore Brothers, the York Brothers and Wayne Raney.

Most of these tracks have never been issued in the UK before now, and a good number of them are making their first appearance on CD anywhere in the world.

The customary extensive sleeve note, plus a wealth of vintage photos and label shots - plus some really great music, of course - will make I'm The Man an exciting prospect for any fan of vintage country music from its golden decade.

Those of us that know the name Red Sovine almost automatically think "Teddy Bear" or "Phantom 309" when it is read or heard. Those are classic performances, to be sure, but what of Red's other recordings? He cut prolifically, as most artists on Starday did, and this long overdue CD is the second of three to focus on his years with the label properly. It includes some truckin numbers, but also cheatin songs, recitations, hillbilly boogie covers and a couple of classic "mornin' after" tunes.

If the early to mid 60s "shuffle" sound is to your liking (and why wouldn't it be?), seek this out. Apart from a comprehensive Bear Family box, these discs on Ace serve to anthologize a great artist who is all to often marginalized to cut rate budget discs.

I was very surprised at the good sound quality, given the age of these recordings and the fact that Starday, being a relatively smaller recording company back in the 50's and 60's, did not have the best recording equipment compared to the others, like Columbia or RCA. In the past, the tapes and CD's I'd purchased of Red Sovine's music had poor sound quality. So, when I put this CD in the player, I was impressed. I have never heard Red sounding so good. I could tell someone went to a bit more effort to give the best possible reproduction here.

I may be out of step but I have always preferred the earlier pre-Teddy Bear side of Red Sovine. Those recordings are fading away so grab any you can get before they disappear into the mists of time.
