About the Author

Leaving the stormy skies of Scotland as a newborn, Poppy Smith headed to India with her British military family. After India came exciting years in Sri Lanka, Singapore, and Kenya where she met her husband, an American doctor looking after Peace Corps volunteers.

As a 22 year old bride of six weeks, Poppy arrived in America and found herself plunged into an utterly foreign world. Baffled by football, strange foods, incomprehensible questions such as "do you want your eggs over-easy or sunny-side up," and the gaping chasm between her upbringing and her husband's, Poppy struggled to adapt. Assailed by loneliness as her husband disappeared into the hospital for his five year residency program, and the growing tension between them, Poppy cried out to the Lord for help to survive as a wife, mother, and Christian.

In God's timing Poppy began studying with Bible Study Fellowship, and after five years was asked to teach the several hundred women in her class. Seven years later, Poppy left BSF. Volunteering with a domestic violence shelter, serving on the Board of an organization for women in Christian leadership, plus teaching evening classes at Multnomah Bible College, and speaking at retreats in the U.S., Poppy found life busy and satisfying.

During these years, aware of the mid-life transition she was going through, Poppy put together a seminar for women experiencing the same adjustments of releasing children, accepting the physical aspect of aging, rejuvenating the long-term marriage, and helping parents. In addition, Poppy wanted to motivate women to accurately assess themselves, anticipate the future decades with relish, and prepare themselves for their best years yet. This well-received seminar resulted in I'm Too Young To be This Old - Surviving and Thriving in the Muddled, Middle Years, a humorous inspirational, and informational guide for the mid-life woman.

With her two children grown and independent, and enjoying the support of her husband, Poppy now has an international Bible teaching ministry. Speaking around the world, she slips comfortably into foreign cultures, adapting herself to being English or American as suits the situation!

More About the Author

Poppy Smith was born in England and grew up there and in Sri Lanka, Singapore and Kenya. She met her American husband in Nairobi and they moved to the United States shortly after they were married. The adjustment to her new marriage and new country, combined with loneliness and loss of all that was familiar, brought Poppy to a defining moment with God. The resulting change, from anger to acceptance, from fighting God to seeking Him, led her into a life-long love of the Bible and the One it reveals.

Poppy is a nationally and internationally recognized author and speaker. Her books include Reaching Higher: Ten dynamic truths from Abraham that will transform your life; I'm Too Human to be Like Jesus; and I'm Too Young to be This Old (bestseller). Her Bible studies include Wisdom for Today's Woman: Insights from Esther; and Speaking Wisely: Exploring the Power of Words.

5.0 out of 5 stars too good to pass up, June 23, 2001

It was a great way to look at mid-life; embrace rather than retreat. Mid-life is a place where richness flows and wisdom is realized. A must read book for any woman in mid-life that needs a fresh perspective and a new view of life.

5.0 out of 5 stars great help, November 13, 2003

This review is from: I'm Too Young to Be This Old! (Paperback)
This book addressed the emotional needs that happen to us middle something aged women. It was amusing, comforting and helpful. I also read Taking Charge of the Change by Pamela Smith and found the 2 books together to be a winning combination.
