Editorial Reviews

From Kirkus Reviews

A book for a well-defined audience--girls looking forward to their first experience as a wedding attendant. Plaisted includes sound etiquette advice (``You should write to the bride and her parents to thank them for including you in such a special day'') accompanied by sample letters; an outline of what to expect before, during, and after the ceremony; and practical suggestions, e.g., hints for dealing with slippery shoes, long dresses, and headpieces, and reminders about posture, fidgeting, and going to the bathroom before the ceremony. Christian, Jewish, and civil ceremonies are mentioned, but Plaisted, perhaps wisely, concentrates on logistics rather than the content of the rites. Softly colored illustrations show a multiethnic assortment of happy people engaged in festivities that look prone to moments of congenial chaos. The straightforward, commonsensical text lapses into silliness only in the final pages, where readers are breathlessly counseled to save a piece of wedding cake to dream on and a heart-shaped space is left blank for a picture of the future spouse. Designed as a gift book, this has a drawback for institutional use--the space inviting children to record their memories. Regardless, it's balanced enough to be read to four-year-old flower girls, or to be read alone by junior bridesmaids. (Nonfiction. 4- 10) -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. Desperate for a "guide" to give to my young flower girl, I came across this book. I ordered it not knowing what to expect. This book is wonderful. It not only explained the who's and what's of a wedding ceremony and reception, it also doubled as a memory book. It includes pages for pictures of the wedding or the child's own drawings and pages for writing thoughts, feelings and accounts of the day. The book also has a sense of childhood fantasy and not just the "facts" of a "how to". I was so pleased with this book, I ordered another for my Jr. bridesmaid.

This is a fantastic book! It's full of fun and information for the flower girl to understand the wedding process and her role. In addition, it is a journal for words and pictures to record her experience, along with a keepsake envelope. For both the flower girl and bride, it's a very special keepsake to be cherished and read over and over...forever!!!

I bought this as part of a gift to my junior bridesmaid. It is an excellent book to help include the little girls in your wedding. It also doubles as a scrapbook for the girls. I highly recommend this book, my junior bridesmaid loved it.

This is for your JBM or FG that is between 8-12. Even though the cover is pretty dorky looking the book is fabulous. It has a lot of really valuable information in it that helps the little lady know what to expect during the months leading up to the wedding and on wedding day. It would only work for relatively traditional weddings though that have showers before, a ceremony with a processional, and a reception with food and dancing. Our favorite parts of the book are when the book is more of a diary format when it asks the girl to write in her ideas and perceptions of both the couple and the wedding process. I gave this book to my niece and in one part she had to draw a picture of her future husband and write about all the qualities that she would like him to have. Her Mom is saving those pages for her own bridal shower in about 15 years. It will be hilarious!! This book is a wonderful keepsake/journal to make your little girl in your wedding feel prepared and very special.

Our six year old had never been to a wedding before being asked to be a flower girl. (What an overwhelming responsibility to a small child!) There are loads of books out there about flower girls, but few are true "hand books" that give an overview of what takes place at weddings and what exactly a flower girl's role is. This book covers all of the basics and more. We found this book to be particularly helpful in explaining the hows, whens, whys, and whos. We relied on a fictionalized flower girl story to address stage fright, sibling envy, and the magic of weddings. Definitely recommended. The book would make a very nice gift from the bride to her flower girl(s).

My daughter was the flowergirl in her aunt's wedding and she LOVED this book. I got it for her a couple months before the wedding and it gave her a real sense of what she would be doing in the wedding. She is an advanced reader for 6 years old, so she read this on her own and was fascinated with the the book's detailing of different types of weddings and different possible expectations. It did a great job of preparing her, and now she is enjoying the keepsake portion of the book (add photos, list who was in the wedding, etc.). Highly recommended!
