5.0 out of 5 stars Whitney's Greatest CD
If I were alive in 1990 I would have bought 3 CDs. "Mariah Carey", "Wilson Phillips", and "I'm Your Baby Tonight". This CD is truly Whitney's best. Each of the songs are so unique and great to dance to or just ponder over. I've had an impatience with the slow stuff on this CD due to my urge to drift to hard rock and move on from this, just get the gist of it, but since the album provided its lyrics, I can at least make a both concrete and subjective review about that. The title track is upbeat and is about luring and surrendering to adoration. "My Name is Not Susan" is ironically upbeat,...

5.0 out of 5 stars Whitney's Greatest CD, July 19, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: I'm Your Baby Tonight (Audio CD)
If I were alive in 1990 I would have bought 3 CDs. "Mariah Carey", "Wilson Phillips", and "I'm Your Baby Tonight". This CD is truly Whitney's best. Each of the songs are so unique and great to dance to or just ponder over. "I'm Your Baby Tonight" is the dancey-romantic song of the album (every album has one) while "All the Man I Need" is the slow romantic song (another essential of any album). "I Belong To You" is the best and most underrated track on the album. "Who Do You Love" is another great of this album. Surprisingly "We Didn't Know" with Stevie Wonder isn't the best duet Whitney's ever done. "My Name is Not Susan" is a funny song, while "Anymore" is another album jewel. This was Whitney's last studio album for 8 years, but it filled the gap perfectly. Bottom Line: While many don't like this album, it's Whitney's best!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Thing She Ever Released, April 10, 2006
By
This review is from: I'm Your Baby Tonight (Audio CD)
I know I will lose some helpful reviews here, maybe maybe not, but This is the best Album Whitney ever released. When this came out, I remember my mom and me rushing out to Target to buy it. We paid like 10 bucks for the cassette, cuz we didn't graduate to CD's until 1993. We played it all the way home, then rushed to continue it on the stereo inside. We didn't dislike one track. I still don't dislike one track here. This was a Family Favorite until it was eaten up in the car's tape deck. I cried that day. My sister found me a copy of the CD at a garage sale for a quarter. I was shocked at the price, and have had the same copy since 1995. I cherish this album and here, I plan to share my thoughts of the songs, and how they are in my opinion...

1)I'm Your Baby Tonight: A great tough opener, no more wanting to dance with somebody...only dancing she wants to do is in the sheets it sounds like...and for good reason, a good girl is only good for a while. The temptation is too much to bare, hence the lyric "From the moment you touched me, I was ready to die...I've never been fatal, you're my first time" For a first single it was an across the board smash and lies very unappreciated in her catalog.

2)My Name Is Not Susan: Another tough song, shedding the pop image attached to her from earlier dance hits. This track has her angry again from matters of the heart. The beat is once again strong and funky, still sounds fresh nearly 20 years later!

3)All The Man I Need: This was the first ballad single from the album, very brooding reminding me of at-the-time labelmate Jeffrey Osbornes 1990 Smash Only Human (Another album and song milestone of the year) where they tell a story, and have great vocal stylings throughout. Brought her the 2nd #1 on the album, and more success for duet partner Kenny G.

4)Lover For Life: Popular quiet storm radio aired track, that is gorgeous and midtempo. A slight departure from the tough edge but definitely sexy and different, featuring some vibes playing, a gauzy airy synth and a fantastic sax solo from Gerald Albright.

5)Anymore: A full blown dance song from Whitney and Babyface, features a fun call and response near the end "Sing It Face..." I used to adore this song when I was younger.

6)Miracle: The only possible candidate for the shlock cannon is here. A beautiful song but perhaps a little overdone, and over used (I had it on a Ford Audio Sampler, and played the song out, so my opinion is kind of biased) I do love the song, but it takes some getting used to, especially if you played it a lot at first, then tired of it afterward.

7)I Belong To You: One of the reasons why Narada Michael Walden is such a great producer is because he writes dreamy songs for his artists (Check out Taylor Dayne's If You Were Mine, or Tevin Campbell's Brown Eyed Girl) Another mid tempo track, and the 3rd hit from the record. This one is a scorcher

8)Who Do You Love?: You can tell this one was written and produced by Luther. Gospel edge, great hook, great bridge, and background vocals to die for. The man was truly one of a kind, he should have produced more for her, this song is fun, and humourous!!

9)We Didn't Know (Duet With Stevie Wonder): You can hear on this track that the pair recorded together. They have such an emotion and chemistry. Whitney compliments Stevie so well and vice versa. The line "Best Of Friends...The Best" is sexy and sentimental all at once, and one fan wishes they had done more together. Much more charisma than her cousin had with Wonder.

10)After We Make Love: The lone track produced by Michael Masser, Houston's former right hand man. Ended up being the second true ballad and wasn't released. The song is beautiful, enhanced by an extreme amount of reverb, but not annoyingly so, with a mellow drum beat and vocal acrobatics, it's a song about losing your virginity...but a good one!

11)I'm Knockin' : Another gospel influenced track, featuring CeCe Winans, this is a definite pot boiler, that starts sounding like another song to add to the dance pile, and adds on the charm at a very slinky breakdown, a very nice, simple close to an album very well done.

In these years Arista records had their share of fierce talent, from Whitney, to Jeffrey Osborne, and Jennifer Holliday, as well as Curtis Stigers, Kenny G, and Lisa Stansfield, the label released so many quality albums that they had nothing but hits on their hands. The fact that critics believed this was a stab for Whitney to gain street cred was just a tad rude, seeing as if you look at her now, it was no fluke that this sounded so genuine. The record got a bad rap, a lot of the white audience disliked it (my dad and a few neighbors happily excepted) but hopefully this won't be looked at as the mess it has been named to be. This will always be my favorite houston album and I stick by what i've written above. To me Houston through Hiatus, bad marriage, drug addiction and rage, has still managed to make good records, though becoming a tad more ghetto and or nervous in the process, I only hope she can surprise me as much as she did with 'I'm Your Baby Tonight'

5.0 out of 5 stars First Dance Album is Platinum Hit !, January 17, 2000
This review is from: I'm Your Baby Tonight (Audio CD)
"I'm Your Baby Tonight" is Whitney's first "dance" album and it's a true sensation. It's no suprise that the album sold way over 4,000,000 album copies, as well as 2,000,000 singles, and not to mention spawned two #1 singles ("I'm Your Baby Tonight" [gold] and "All the Man That I Need" [also gold]). This album is a real gem. So get it now before the time comes when finding it will be like finding the Supremes third album. Remember the name of it? ... I didn't think so.

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm Your Baby Tonight!, January 11, 2006
This review is from: I'm Your Baby Tonight (Audio CD)
Let's go back shall we? When Whitney Houston worked with the best in the business and every music person in the business was appreciative of her outstanding and unique voice. When Whitney worked it with these majestic mavericks in the music industry.
Where are they now? How much does a woman have to give? Here on just "I'm Your Baby Tonight" is an album that took Ms. Houston to new heights and I don't care if she ever recorded, "I Will Always Love You," but she did. This CD now is a remarkable reminder of her phenomenal talent as a vocalist. It is so bittersweet that her recording of "All The Man That I Need" is the man who watched her right now at the age of 42, I'm 44 watch her career evaporate somehow. I miss Whitney Houston's voice and charisma...she is timeless, but how much time will go by for those who love her to hear her sing again?

5.0 out of 5 stars Houston, we DON'T have a problem!, December 15, 1999

I love this cd, but then I love all things Whitney! "My Name Is Not Susan" is just plain great. Everytime I hear that opening I just get the chills. I also like "I'm Your Baby," a GREAT mood piece I play it everytime I feel lonely. I'd also like to recommend "I'm Knockin'." It's not everyone's favorite but if you listen to it enough you start seeing where Whitney was really commin' from on this album. A very nice conclusion to a great cd. Highly recommended for those unfamiliar with Houston's work!

5.0 out of 5 stars Whitney's 3rd Arista album very excellent!!!, February 3, 2007

I'm Your Baby Tonight was Whitney Houston's 3rd album with Arista. It was released in 1990 and contains some great songs on it. Why is this title discontinued? What is the reason for it to not be available anymore? That is what's peculiar here. Whatever the reason as to why this title is not available anymore is anyone's guess. It doesn't make any sense to me as to why this title is discontinued. There are some songs on this title that I like. The title track, My Name is Not Susan, Anymore, Miracle, All the Man That I Need, After We Make Love, and I'm Knockin' are the song titles on this album that I like. The front cover picture of Whitney sitting on the seat of the motorcycle is a great one. To the folks at Arista: Please reissue this title back to fans of Whitney's so that they will have a chance to enjoy it again. Whitney fans: Until this album is reissued, you'll just have to bear with getting it used.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless Diva's Ear Candy!!!!!!, August 1, 2006
This review is from: I'm Your Baby Tonight (Audio CD)
This cd presents a hot and smoldering young Whitney Houston! With an excellent production and song writers that include Stevie Wonder, Baby Face, and Luther Vandross, Whitney proved from an early age that she musically has what it takes. Her sense of rhythm and timing has always been brilliant!

The opening title cut is a earth-shattering rocker! Whitney wailing "My Name Is Not Susan" makes for a powerful vocal. "All The Man That I Need" is deeply passionate, all the while contrasting tenderness with strength. "I Belong To You" is the ultimate soul song! "Who Do You Love?" is an electric dance number. Music legend Stevie Wonder joins Whitney for a funky duet in "We Didn't Know". Whitney's very fine vocal in "After We Make Love" is gorgeous and incomparable. Don't miss Whitney hitting searing gospel notes in the uptempo finale "I'm Knockin".

Whitney Houston is one of the grandest divas around the world. Whitney's passion brings out the brilliance in her music. With prayers and good wishes, hopefully that passion will become her strength in her personal life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Honestly, I don't understand the bad reviews this album got., October 29, 2003

Whitney of the early 90s is as good as the Whitney of the 80s with whose voice we all fell in love with. The title track I'm Your Baby Tonight was a good choice to open the album, it is, in my opinion, the best upbeat Whitney song, equals with How Will I Know and I Wanna Dance With Somebody. (And it has the best video, with those Supremes-like scenes and all, this video simply rocks!)

The second song My Name Is Not Susan is as good as the first, especially for the lyrics. All The Man That I Need - now, this is one of my fave Whitney ballads. (Okay, it's a cover but so is I Will Always Love You, and in both cases the Whitney version is better.) Now I won't go into details about every song, I only say that this album is a great collection of love songs, shows every side of the emotion, love, sensuality, jealousy, loss, friends becoming lovers (a duet with Stevie Wonder!).

Buy it if you loved the first two Whitney albums. If you've heard only her newer albums, you have to know that this is something different (pure pop, not R&B), but it's time for you to explore the past style of this wonderful lady.

3.0 out of 5 stars Whitney's "I'm Your Baby Tonight", February 20, 2011
This review is from: I'm Your Baby Tonight (Audio CD)
I've had an impatience with the slow stuff on this CD due to my urge to drift to hard rock and move on from this, just get the gist of it, but since the album provided its lyrics, I can at least make a both concrete and subjective review about that. The title track is upbeat and is about luring and surrendering to adoration. "My Name is Not Susan" is ironically upbeat, but it's about focusing on a romantic partner instead of a past one. "All The Man I Need," possibly the strongest and most incredible track on this album, is quite self-explanatory and slow. "Lover for Life" is midtempo; it's analogous to going to jail but in an urgent way. "Anymore" is, once again, upbeat, but could upset you because it can be reminiscent if you could relate to it, for those who got out of a bad relationship at all; it's sort of a getting-over-somebody track. "Miracle," which is supposedly about a regretful abortion, is a slower track that showcases Whitney's captivating vocals; it's a poignant number and actually is about wanting to help someone out. The wondorous "Who Do You Love" has a delectable rhythm. "After We Make Love" reminded me of being in a champagne tub; so peaceful.

The problem with this album is that most of the tracks are lyrically short-lasting in effect. With trying to get over someone to making a declaration of individuality to lamenting to being in wonder to having an initial pleasant affair to external uncertainty, it didn't stand out to me, especially the one that implies marriage. Definitely a fall off from her earlier efforts. At times, it's cheesy.
