4.0 out of 5 stars The first Journey, not as good as ESCM
The first album of the trance wizard BT is quite a journey indeed. But I must say I enjoy his 2nd album alot better than the tracks on "IMA".

One of the reasons I like ESCM the best is because theres more to it... listen to the first track, its got everything, trance, chanting, guitars, pop-ish vocals, etc. Whats also cool is that on ESCM the tracks blend...

3.0 out of 5 stars Trance in its infancy
I remember the first rave I ever went to and hearing BT's "Flaming June" off his ESCM album - words can't express how truly amazed I was at hearing something so intricate and beautiful. Soon thereafter I purchased "ESCM" and, three years later, I still consider it to be one of the ultimate original trance works. About a month after buying...

Whats also cool is that on ESCM the tracks blend smoothly together and they enclude really cool sampling as well.

I don't mean to rip on this disc in any way, I enjoy it for what it is, Trance...where as ESCM is more of an experience...

The bonus disc on IMA is the one I spin more than the first one... I love his remix of blue skies, and sasha's mega mix is great...

So, I recomend picking up ESCM along with this one, and if you want more BT or trance, get Paul Van Dyk's "Seven Ways" and listen to the last track on the bonus disc... its a BT remix, very cool.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nearly as good. But of course..., June 20, 2000

I can totally agree with some of the reviews given about BT and the comparison between this album and his others ESCM and MISL. What I think we need to realise is that these songs were written over 5 years ago and have no doubt changed the scene for future artists. At the time, this guy must have been a god! I'm one of those people who hears a good new album and immediately seek previous productions from the same artist. Overall, I am really beginning to love this CD (can you tell I'm listening right now 8-) and I think its definately worth adding to your collection. Listening to earlier works gives you an idea of the basis of the artist, where the guy/gal is coming from. In order of prefernce - I'd buy ESCM, MISL then IMA - I'm not putting down IMA - I just think you need to get to know the artist before you jump headlong into their past. But if you're a BT fan like me, you'll just HAVE to have it. The music is great, beats work in and out, there are melodies which come and go without you noticing, one of the best tracks (and longest) that I have heard in my life (serious) would have to be Sasha's Voyage of IMA - a track that long and that good should be a record! I think I've said enough. Long live BT, PVD, Chemical Bros. and those who shape their own scenes.

This is the closest you will ever get to experiencing life in the timespan of one hour. BT has created a beautiful journey, full of the joys and the tears that comprise the human experience... this is what emotion SOUNDS like.

If you don't have this, buy it-- hell, I'll buy it for you. It is more valuable that gold and I would only hope that this CD will be the last thing I hear before I die.

No joke.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful (if somewhat dated) ..., August 22, 2003

Constantly keeping his listeners on the edge with his cutting edge releases, BT's first CD is in retrospect very good, but nowadays sounds rather dated. Compare this to other releases around the same time frame (circa 1996) and you'll see what I'm saying.

This however does not detract from the obvious quality of this production. If your looking for a text book definition of what uplifting, melodic trance sounds like, look no further. Classics like Embracing the Sunshine, Embracing the Future, Quark, and Loving You More effortlessly transport you to a different universe, where Tripping the Light Fantastic (a personal favorite) and Deeper Sunshine keep the album honest (and out of the Robert Miles' realm of uber sap). If anything this mix is an excellent starter for someone looking to explore BT's catalog or new listeners of the trance genre that are looking for a solid entertaining production.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfectly sublime, March 8, 2000

Ima is a mix of ambient and dream house that is perfect for relaxing in bed on a rainy day or just some laid-back grooving. BT, a prodigy from Berkeley School of Music (known for producing modern sensations such as Paula Cole), is an artist in every sense of the word. Ima is intensely emotional and healing. "Poisedon" is my favorite, a relaxed/highly danceable tune, followed by "Sasha's Voyage of Ima", then the popular tune "Blue Skies", featuring Tori Amos. This album is great for background music for studying or writing, or just spacing out to. Aggressive at times, amazingly docile at others, this album always conveys a sense of peace. Highly recommended. For a more danceable tune, check out his single "Godspeed."

This is without a doubt, the greatest cd I own. BT spins a landscape so lush and warm, you will be mesmerised as to where this cd will take you. The perfect cd to listen to late at night, when all else is still. The sounds on this cd are a full spectrum of emotions, mostly positive. It took me all my life to find the perfect cd, but here it is.

I bought this particular album on import (the (original) UK version is just 1 CD, with 5 tracks on it, though that does include Sascha's Voyage Of Ima at a whopping 42:45 long) a few years ago, shortly after ESCM came out, and I was totally blown away by it. Considering that the original UK version came out in 1995 (long before even Way Out West or Robert Miles were about) it was a revolutionary trance album, and it was one of the reasons why got into trance very early, and long before it became popular. The fact that this version is double the length of the original version helps it a lot, as there is a lot more variation in it, and it also has a nice flow to it. When listening to this album it's very important to consider that this was a complete revelation, as trance hadn't really existed in a form quite this pure before this record was released. Some people may miss this point when listening to it now, 7 years after most of this record was put together, both trance and BT himself of course, have moved on a long way since Ima. But Ima has been an inspiration to countless artists, and was an impressive debut by the man I consider to be the finest srtist in the hisrory of dance music. A classic, and a must for the collection of any connoisseur.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still good after I imported my copy five years ago., June 6, 2000
By
hojo (Glendale, AZ) - See all my reviews

I first heard the track "Loving you more" five years ago off of a Sasha bootleg mixtape from Europe. For several months I searched and searched for the artist who made the track and finally discovered it was produced by a man named Brian Transeau. In 1995, BT had also produced an exquisite remix of a track called "State of Grace." I picked up Ima in hopes of having a CD copy of the song "Loving you More" and its remix. However, one quickly realizes that every single track on both CDs makes your skin tingle with a rush of positive energy. This is definitely one of the rare CDs in anyone's collection of music that frequents cd players and changers even five years after its (UK) release. For me, the stand out tracks (it's hard to choose from all of them) are Loving you more, Nocturnal Transmission, and the Delphinium Days mix of Blue Skies by Tori Amos. Nocturnal Transmission always reminds me of beginning an exciting journey up a winding road in a fast car late a night with a close friend. And guess who's probably playing the guitar in the Delphinium Days mix? (see my review of BT's Movement in Still Life..the UK imported double CD version) Allow BT to take you on a journey with music so good it will bring a tear to your eye. Perhaps you will want to mimic the action of the person on the cover of the CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic., March 11, 2000

Excellent contribution to the gerne. A must have for your electronica collection. BT designs wonderful soundscape much in the way an architect would esign a skyscraper. He puts down a framework beat and melody and than pulls out the sonic trick bag to build upon it. The result is a beautiful tower of multilayered music. This guy is the real deal kids. A shame radio doesn't have the guts to put him in rotation as some of his tunes could be considered pop oriented (think blue skies, Remember). This CD made my spirit sour! You can tell Brian puts a lot of inner emotion into his music. He does it successfully, that's why I gave it 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars This album is the essence of lovely(not jolly) trance, February 18, 2000

In my opinion, this album is the best BT album ever created. It's the perfect album to listen to while appreciating life or expressing creativity. It makes you feel all warm inside lol. If you're looking for an album with sophisticated composure, radiating positive vibes, this is the album for you. "Deeper Sunshine" is one of the best songs ever created, and is one of my personal all time favorites. It causes the same type of feeling you get while listening to songs like "The Silence," by Mike Koglin, or the "1998" matt darey remix, by Binary Finary(These are also songs that you MUST have). If you're worried that this album is jolly, such as that song "blue" by eifl whatever, have no fears. This album is far from jolly. Not every track is good on this album(particularly the ones with vocals), but the song "Deeper sunshine" alone makes the album worth purchasing. All in all, the majority of the album is great. Bt's new album is worth getting, but Ima is his best in my opinion. It's a MUST have...
