About the Author
A native Texan, Virginia Bernhard (Ph.D. , Rice University: M.A., University of Pennsylvania; B.A., Rice University) is Professor of History at the University of St. Thomas in Houston. She is the author of a historical novel about the founding of Jamestown, Virginia, A Durable Fire (William Morrow, 1990, Avon Books, 1991). She is the co-author or editor of a number of books on women's history.
