Although 25 years old, this book still presents the state of the art in many areas of mathematical morphology. Mathematical morphology is widely used in image segmentation, noise removal and to characterize the shape and size of objects in an image. It specializes in "binary" images, in which each pixel is either "black" or "white", but is also used for gray-scale images. The book comprehensively describes the science of mathematical morphology in a way that is very self-contained. It also includes a chapter on random set models which can parameterize images and produce alternative, computer-generated realizations of them. The book's notation is a little idiosyncratic but wonderfully consistent across all the chapters. It requires little prior knowledge of image analysis or mathematical theory, although some knowledge of mathematics, random processes and expected values is helpful. The author is one of the founders of the science of mathematical morphology.
