Book Description

Bygie Hudson's isolated life as an artist was perfect... except for her husband. Her seclusion is shattered when the police arrive to tell her there has been an accident. The man she'd been married to for fifteen years, and considered divorcing for fourteen, is dead... and they believe she may be behind it.

As she fights to clear her name, she learns her husband has been selling far more than cars through their successful dealership, and the corruption is linked to a prominent judge... with tentacles reaching straight into San Diego PD. The deadly fallout puts her life in jeopardy.

When a witness disappears, and the threat of a reporter on the hunt for headlines is removed, lead Detective Tom Hall is told to walk away from the case. But the widow is an enigma. Unwilling to let go, he risks what's left of his stalled career by following leads on his own time. He refuses to let Bygie walk away until he uncovers the truth.

Sometimes, you just can't see crazy... even when it's staring you in the face.

4.0 out of 5 stars Satisfying Afternoon Mystery Read September 7, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Despite what the blurb, the title and the cover image may lead you to believe, Image of Deceit is not a hardboiled suspense novel but rather an altogether cozier read weaving together strands of mystery, loss and love. Bygie Hudson and Tom Hall are likeable, nicely crafted protagonists; the cast of supporting characters is less well-developed and while the answer to "whodunnit?" comes out of left field, the quality of the writing is enough to carry you through to the satisfying end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good debut novel, looking forward to the next one! September 5, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a really great debut novel, from an author I trust will do as well in the future. Differing from most self-published firsts, this book has gone through copy-editing. The awkward misspellings and sentence fragments are nowhere to be found - making this a "can't-put-it-down" read.

It's reminiscent of early efforts from John Sandford, Robert J. Parker, Dick Francis and others - taught plotting, realistic locations, believable characters wholly formed, natural dialog... sometimes the descriptions are a bit long; other times, well, I wanted to shake the sand out of my shoes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Female Mystery Writers Watch Out November 17, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read in bed, only to fall asleep and find my books on the floor or under the sheets with me on top of them. This kept me awake until 3 am enjoying the deep character development Ms. Shannon shared. I find her writing style right up there with Patricia Cornwell, Gillian Flynn, Lisa Jackson and Sue Grafton. Great first write, and look forward to more of Ms. Shannon's mystery books.

Received this book as a Birthday gift. From the moment I opened the book, I could not put this book down!
I was quickly drawn in to the main characters from the very first page, and how they played into the whole storyline.

I would recommend this book,it is a GREAT read. Can't wait for the next one.

4.0 out of 5 stars When will the journey continue? September 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
So nice to read a new author and be pulled in so quickly. All of the characters seemed so "normal" that you felt like you could meet one of them around the next corner. Too soon the story ended and now I will have to wait to read the next step of the journey. At least I hope there is more planned. :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Promising First Novel March 19, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I just finished reading and reviewing Image of Deceit for another site and thoroughly enjoyed the novel. Image of Deceit was an intriguing story of a woman (Bygie Hudson) who had wanted a divorce 14 of the 15 years she was married, only to find out she still didn't know the depth of his depravity. When Lars Hudson ends up dead, Bygie ends up at top of the list of possible killers.

Enter Detectives Tom Hall and his partner Ruby Wilson. The investigation into Lars' life and business, the fall-out from his murder, and the effort someone is making to scare Bygie makes a very interesting read.

The main characters are well drawn, and the pace of the story keeps the pages turning. Tom Hall is especially interesting and it would be nice to find out where he ends up after this story is over. Hopefully, we will get to read more books by Jill Shannon.P

This review was based on a complimentary copy of Image of Deceit I received from Paper Mill Publishing in return for my honest opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Satisfying Mystery
Satisfying mystery with a good plot and minimum violence, just what I like. Maybe just a little too much emotional debate for my taste, but the rest of the novel was good reading. Read more

More About the Author

I've been telling stories for a long time but getting one down on paper is another matter. I entered the professional writing world as a freelance writer covering the people behind some impressive motorcycle builds. In my spare time I worked on The Novel...

It takes more time than most would believe possible to get a story to print. I personally found it best to walk away from the project and let it rest awhile. Months and months in fact. Whenever I re-entered the world I'd created for my story, I had a sharper eye for what was a bunch of hogwash and what might be pretty darn good. The right words in the correct order can have a powerful impact and it takes time to fit all of the pieces together.

Support is also needed in a big way. Writers need editors and readers that will preview with a critical eye and not be afraid to tell you the truth. Family needs to understand the vacant look that comes with brain overload while figuring out plots.

Reading is how I relax. I devoured books as a child and that appetite has not diminished. My favorite genre is mystery, but I also venture away from the top ten list of well known mystery writers and read a broad spectrum of non-fiction.

I play a lot during the summer months, not much gets done in the way of work. We are a household of landspeed racers. I race a 1941 Indian Motorcycle and hold records in the 350cc vintage class for both gas and fuel. I'm also proud to be part of history as a Bonneville SCTA starter. The hours are long, the sun is hot, but the reward is inspiring. To witness dreams becoming reality is humbling.

I'm currently working on my next novel, another mystery with a strong female protagonist. (Well, I will be working on it when summer is over!)

Thanks for stopping by!
