Book Description

September 5, 2009
The book leads the reader through a step-by-step workflow for processing images to correct defects and enhance the details for maximum visibility and presentation, and to isolate features for measurement of structural, object or geometric information in the images, using Adobe Photoshop and commercially available plugins. Intended for college students, forensic technicians, research scientists, and others who rely upon images as a source of information, the text includes procedures appropriate for light and electron microscopy, crime scene photographs, surveillance video, and other applications. The author is a retired university professor who has taught thousands of students these methods in a 50-year career, has written several widely used reference and textbooks on the subject, and is frequently called upon as an expert witness. This text is an outgrowth of his teaching, and uses a rich set of example images to illustrate the various algorithms that are described and applied.

About the Author

Dr. Russ is a retired university professor with a background in physics and materials science, and extensive experience with both light and electron microscopy. Analysis of images to characterize materials microstructure led to the early adoption of computers and the development of computer-based image analysis methods, which spread to encompass a broad variety of applications from biology and medicine to machine vision, food science, archaeology, and forensic imaging. In a fifty-year career, he has developed methods and written software, and taught regular academic courses and short courses on these methods to several thousand students on five continents. His numerous books include the widely used "Image Processing Handbook" (now in its fifth edition from CRC Press), as well as applications-oriented books on the use of imaging in food science and forensics, and a textbook on writing image processing software. He is frequently called upon to use his expertise as a consultant and expert witness.

More About the Author

In his fifty-year career as scientist and educator, John Russ has used image processing and analysis as a principal tool for understanding and characterizing the structure and function of materials. Images from a wide variety of devices - including light and electron microscopes, x-ray and neutron tomography, and more - require computer processing and measurement to extract the important data. Familiarity with the algorithms and instruments led to Dr. Russ' expertise being extended to a much broader range of images - from astronomy to biomedical research to food science to forensics. Teaching the principles and methods involved to several thousand students, and consulting for many industrial clients, has further broadened Dr. Russ' experience and the scope of applications for image processing and analysis. His numerous books provide a workflow-oriented guide to performing image processing, richly illustrated comparisons of various methods, programming code to implement the algorithms, and applications - specific examples in fields as diverse as food science, metrology, materials analysis, and forensics.
