Book Description

Suitable for Advent or Lent, these meditations on pictorial images of light are navigational aids in the ascent to trust in the triumph. In a relatively late in life synthesis of her interests in art and religion, Sharon R. Chace explores art that evokes the light of a star, inclusion, forgiveness, caring, healing, speaking truth to power, transfiguration, and resurrection. Questions for individual or group consideration invite further reflection and discussion about the art and personal experiences. Living in the light is a way to participate in God-like healing love. Being lights in the world can help one another sustain trust in the implicit meaning of Christmas and Easter that is in the prologue of the Gospel of John (1:1–5). The Gospel writer concludes with a declarative sentence of promise: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.”

“Color is the way this writer gets to God. She loves yellow sometimes more than blue, blue sometimes more than yellow, and art as much as God. Read this book and you will find your way toward much color, art, and even a little God.”
—Donna Schaper, Senior Minister, Judson Memorial Church, New York

“Confessional, scholarly, luminous! Images of Light is both memoir and curriculum for individual [and] group reflection. Artist and scholar Sharon Chace synthesizes insight she has gained in her personal journey of faith, grappling with the life of Jesus as illuminated by painters and theologians. . . . She invites you to join her, from your heart, home, and place of worship.”
—Elizabeth Rice-Smith, Minister and Teacher, United Church of Christ

Sharon R. Chace is the author of Portfolio of Painterly Poems: A Pilgrim’s Path to God (2006), An Artistic Approach to New Testament Literature (2008), Protestant Pulse: Heart Hopes for God (2009), and My First Introduction to the New Testament (2011).
