4:31 A.M. January 17, 1994: On a previously unknown fault line in the San Fernando Valley, an earthquake originally pegged at magnitude 6.6, rumbled violently from a 70-mile fracture in the earth's crust. Millions of Southern Californians were jolted from their sleep.
The Earthquake Lasted Only Seconds: In seconds, monumental freeway overpasses toppled like building blocks, 57 people died. Thousands were injured. Apartment buildings and homes collapsed, 20,000 residents were left homeless.
