Book Description

1883792037 978-1883792039 February 1994 1st
4:31 A.M. January 17, 1994: On a previously unknown fault line in the San Fernando Valley, an earthquake originally pegged at magnitude 6.6, rumbled violently from a 70-mile fracture in the earth's crust. Millions of Southern Californians were jolted from their sleep. The Earthquake Lasted Only Seconds: In seconds, monumental freeway overpasses toppled like building blocks, 57 people died. Thousands were injured. Apartment buildings and homes collapsed, 20,000 residents were left homeless. The Aftermath: The impact will be felt long after the shaking stops as Los Angeles rebuilds ravaged freeways, copes with strong aftershocks, recovers from property damage which will total in the billions of dollars, and prepares for the future. 4:31 Images of the 1994 Los Angeles Earthquake: by the staff of the Los Angeles Times will become the record of history of the largest and most costly disaster in U. S. history.

4.0 out of 5 stars Who's counting, March 21, 2009
This review is from: Images of the Los Angeles Earthquake: 4:31 (ILLUSTRATED) (Paperback)
You may have noticed that when you typed in the isbn for this book, you got a print listing for 6.6 and a cover illustration for 4:31. Don't fear: it's the same collection of color photos, articles and graphics by the staff of the LA Times. When the earthquake first hit in 1994, it was reported as a 6.6 on the Richter scale -- a natural title. Then, after the Times hurried to bring the book out, the Richter count was raised to 6.7. Trust a journalist to worry about that kind of accuracy, and that's why the title was changed to the time in the morning when the quake struck.
