This is the first book I've read about the Old Tucson Studio and coming in at just under 180 pages it was a great introduction. "Images of Old Tucson" covers many of the classic western features filmed at the location from "Arizona" - for which the the first 40 or so buildings were constructed - all the way to "Three Amigos!"(1986) and beyond to when, sadly, in the nineties much of the famous western location was destroyed by fire. The book also covers many of the enigmatic figures who graced the dusty streets like Randolph Scott, Audie Murphy, Paul Newman, Clint Eastwood, a young Harrison Ford and of course The Duke himself. In the late 50s a man named Robert Shelton began turning the ghost town into a western themed amusement park complete with stunt shows, carriage rides, and even a narrow gauge railway around the perimeter. Shelton was able to have Old Tucson maintain a healthy balance between tourist trap and film location. In fact a big reason for tourists to visit the attraction was the small chance one might catch a glimpse of a famous movie star. Then the seventies came with a grittier, less romantic view of the west. The book goes into less detail if any about films (and television shows) shot there in the 80s and 90s but who cares about those anyway? "Images of Old Tucson" focuses on the golden age of the american western and I highly recommend this heavily illustrated and well researched book.

"Images Of Old Tucson" written by Michael J. Bifulco captures the magic and excitement of what at one time was an authentic, complete, western town movie set and amusement park.

Author Bifulco chronicles the entire history of the site along with the scores of classic motion pictures and televsion series filmed there over a half-century. This heavily illustrated book even includes the original layout maps of the amusement park from the tourist brochures!

Thanks to this book the reader discovers that during it's heyday (lasting all through the 1980's) that
"Old Tucson" was an incredibly exciting, fun place to visit in person. He also documents the site's haunting destruction into the ruins of a true 'ghost town'.

Hollywood movie fans and western film fanatics will want to add "Images Of Old Tucson" to their library. The author's love and enthusiasm for "Old Tucson" is infectious to the reader.

I enjoyed this book. I too had visited Old Tucson before the fire and had the same experience when I made my 3rd trip there, much was lost to the fires. Along with my own experiences and photos of Old Tucson, this is a welcome addition to my book shelf.

The book is informative on the early westerns that were shot at Old Tucson and I think the highlight of the historical events reported in the book was the section dealing with Rio Bravo. This book could use a second volume as it seems to stop short of some of the really important productions that were also done such as the Clint Eastwood films, Little House on the Prarie, and Young Guns to mention a few. I would have like to have seen a little more research and information such as the changes and additions to the exteriors and more detail on the contributions of those like John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, and Michael Landon. There was however some mention of improvments to the stuido from John Wayne in his production, a little about the Courthouse built for Clint Eastwood's "Joe Kid" but no details mentioned of the Michael Landon years other than a brief mention of Kansas Street.

Nice photographs throughout the book. Many of the stories told about the early westerns shot there seem to admit that little or no real screen appreances of Old Tucson in some of them. It was interesting that many early western stars are mentioned in the book. Might have been a good idea to focus more on feature films that actually showed more of the studio in their films. Here again, the section dealing with Rio Bravo accomplished that, but films like Joe Kidd, Three Amigos, and others would have been an interesting addition.

A little more focus on how many of the buildings on the set were practical sets.

Good for those into old movies and western themes. It is part of the entertainment culture. It helps to have been there.
