Barcode Scanner / B003OUTYBE

I bought this barcode scanner to use with my home library of books, movies, music, and video games. This scanner is great - truly plug-and-play, and after it's plugged in, all you have to do is keep pressing the scanner button. The product code is scanned into Notepad or whatever text field you've focused on with your computer, and the scanner puts a carriage return after each scan, so you can scans stacks of material without having to interact with the computer after each item.

I really like that this scanner has a soft beep after a successful scan - it's helpful feedback, and you don't have to keep looking at the computer to see if the scan was successful. I also like that the weight is fairly light, but sturdy, and the button is easy to press. The fact that you can "hover" the scanner and don't have to touch the item directly is also very nice. Really, I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

After looking at all the different types of barcode scanners available, I chose this model strictly based upon price and the fact that it had a wider scanning window than the other with the same price.

It works wonderfully. I had it out of the box, plugged into my USB port, and was scanning things in within seconds. No driver was required (for XP).

Inside the scanning window are four orange LEDs. Once the button is depressed, you have about two seconds to point the device at the barcode you wish to scan. Obviously, setting it right on the barcode is the best way, but it seems to have a range of about 4cm.

The device decodes the barcode quickly and behaves as if someone had typed in the numbers. The information flows directly to wherever your mouse or cursor is. You do not have to wait for the scanner to become ready, as it reads and decodes barcodes faster than you could put another one in front of it.

I tried it on five or six different types of barcodes, and they all were read quickly and - most importantly - accurately.

I was worried that the item would be cheap or not work or require a hinky driver. I am pleased that none of these things are true. It is lightweight and easy to grip regardless of what hand you prefer. The cord is of a good length, allowing you to move with some freedom from your computer. It doesn't require an additional power supply as it draws all of the power from USB so I wouldn't use it in a passive USB hub for that reason.

There is a manual included with it, but I have yet to bother to look at it. Really, anyone can set this up.

Thank you for making, advertising, and shipping a fine product at a very reasonable price.

I was skeptical at first because the only reviewer was a PC guy. As a MAC guy, I was excited that this barcode scanner works. I am using it to catalog my DVD collection which is currently 1700+. To enter each barcode manually would have taken a lifetime and not to mention be extremely annoying. This barcode scanner works perfectly. I plug it in to the usb of my mac and it asks to identify the keyboard, I disregard this window and just close the window by clicking the little red circle. Then I am good to go.
The barcode is read and is processed like typing on the computer. If you are in Text edit or a word processing doc; the barcode scanner will type the numbers for you and then it automatically processes a return, so if you were to hit two barcodes it would like this:
097361383446
097361383446

And the cursor will be on the third line awaiting next entry. Great for spreadsheets too, the return will enact as a next item entry. On Delicious Library (the media cataloging program that I bought this for) it works perfectly. All I do is click on the library icon and just start scanning (clicking, just like at the market). I have looked at other barcode scanners, but the price of this guy beats them. I was willing to shell out the 40 bucks for this to try and hope for its effectiveness, and I am glad I did. This product is awesome and it beats entering all those numbers by hand.

This barcode scanner just works out of the box, on a modern PC or MAC, without any setting up, other than plugging in the USB cable and firing up the software you want to use.

The scanner says "Acan" on the top, and CCD BARCODE READER, S/N 00010675, Design IN TAIWAN Assembly IN CHINA on the underside.

To enter a code into a field in your software - or anywhere that you can enter text or numbers - what you need to do is to put the cursor of your computer into the place that you would have entered a barcode number manually with your keyboard. Then aim the scanner at the code - preferably put the scanner over the code physically - and pull the trigger - a very easily pressed button. It enters the barcode into the spot that you placed your cursor - in any program - and gives out a beep. It does this in about a 1/10th of a second. I can scan about 2 books a second if I have laid the books bottom up on a table with their barcodes exposed. After each scan it does a carriage return and line feed - so that you end up with a column of barcode numbers if your program allows - or each item separately added if that is how your software works.

The scanner has its own light - it would work in the dark. It scans perfectly through shiny plastic, such as CD and DVD cases.

It comes with a book of 70 pages - 64 of which are covered in barcodes which you can scan to reprogram it to work
As I write this I am messing about scanning codes from the book. I just scanned "Begin Setting", "Twinkle/Auto-inductive Enable", "End Setting", "Save Setting Parameter"

Now the light stays on all the time, blinking. I do not need to press the button to scan. Once it has scanned the first item the light stays solid for 6 seconds, before it starts blinking again.
