5.0 out of 5 stars Conceptual Epitome of A Melodic Goth Metal Record January 7, 2012
By H. Lind
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
As a big fan of the melodic goth rock/metal genre, especially with that of female vocals, I had been waiting for Nightwish's new album for many years now. I thought their last album "Dark Passion Play" was a very good entry into their discography, but I thought their new-ish lead singer Anette needed time to find herself in order to secure her starring role in one of the best female-vocal metal bands in the world.

I felt like I was going to have to be very critical of this album when it dropped and I was waiting for it for a long time, especially with bands like Lacuna Coil and Within Temptation also taking their time recording new albums for 2011/2012. It was an absolute must that Nightwish knock it out of the park with this release, and honestly after over 45 days of listening to it near-daily now, I can completely affirm they hit a grand slam with this one. Before I go any further, I just want to say that I've been thinking about how I could review this album without sounding like an over-hyping fanboy for about a month now, and it's been a battle for me to keep humble about this release.

Before getting into any talk about the quality of the album, the concept of the album needs to be realized. This is the epitome of a concept album and Nightwish make it known from the first song. Their description of the album is "an old man looking back on his life reminiscing about the past", and although that seems fully accurate to what goes on musically, there is no way that describes the epic detail of what is contained within each of these tracks. This is the epitome of a successful concept album and bands of any other genre need to take note at how Nightwish really lays this music out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Continued Excellence December 27, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Brilliant arrangements and great musicianship combined with an interesting thyme. Anette's voice fits the material and seems more of an integral part of the band on this release. This one has some incredible dynamics and the material really varies.

My favorites are "I want my Tears Back" which feels like a progression from "Wish I had an Angel" and "Imaginaerum" which seems to be a summary of everything covered in this deep, wide ranging effort. The materials ranges from the epic to some songs which have a baroque feel to them. There are even a few songs that sound like the type of sea chanty you would hear in a Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

The second instrumental disc really illustrates the beauty and depth of the arrangements. If he was born in a different era Tuomas would have been another Wagner or Beethoven.

This album seems to show that they are completely over Tarja's departure. Anybody who likes Symphonic Metal or Symphonic Rock will be overjoyed with this awesome effort.

To begin, I have been a long-time Nightwish fan- right there with them since they released "Angels Fall First". I have accepted Nightwish's growth over the years, and there will be no Tarja/Anette debate here. I loved the work the group has produced with Tarja, and I love the work they have produced with Anette. ( I don't think I'll get over Roy Khan leaving Kamelot, tho, but that's a different story :p ). However, many refer to the post-Tarja days as "The New Nightwish Era" when in all honesty, I believe they have been growing from one album to the next, all the way down the line. Sure, compensations have to be made for the vocal ranges of whoever their current vocalist is, but I still believe this was the direction Nightwish was heading, even if they still had Tarja.

Let's face it, we'll probably never get another 'Century Child', which to me symbolizes the epitome of Nightwish's style. However, when it comes to their two most recent albums, I honestly believe 'Dark Passion Play' is stronger and superior to 'Imaginaerum'. 'Dark Passion Play', while still obviously an exploration of different sounds and approaches, still seems like a more genuine effort to me. 'Imaginaerum' is pretentious, overly-ambitious, bloated, and is almost a parody of itself- as if Tuomas' music has developed an ego and character all it's own. It feels more like he is in competition with himself to create every new project with the intention of making it 'more epic than the last. The epicest epic of them all!' as opposed to just sitting down and composing honest music, like he used to.

The album as a whole is incredibly disjointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Do Very Nice and Nightwish Equate? February 4, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I LOVE it! I will not break it all down and analyze it, we already very graciously have several wonderful reviews, but I might have an insight and a suggestion. I was concerned when I initally read some of the negative commentary, even knowing full well how some fans do not like for their favorite artists to change and progress much. When I listened to this recording for the first time I understood how nostalgic fans could be disappointed. It's very a-typical. I believe the mistake, however, is the approach in listening to Imaginaerum. Do not listen to it for a Nightwish recording, but for essentially what it is - a soundtrack! Much of the music is related to imagery. (Which we do not yet have!) I believe when we are able to watch the film, those of us who love the music will appreciate it even more, and our fellow fans who have been disappointed just might gain a new appreciation.

Annette is not right for Nightwish!
Have you ever really given Anette a chance? I was skeptical too, once, and then I saw her live. Even on the very last date of a very long world tour, that lasted more weeks than it was supposed to, she knocked it out of the park. Her performance most certainly stood out in the crowd, and I... Read More

Why is this being released so late in the US??!!
I just got my copy + the shirt from the Nightwish shop. Just go to their website and buy it now if you want it :P Not sure if you can get the shirt still though... It was like 45 bucks or something for both... Totally worth it though because the shirt is badass ;)
