Book Description

November 16, 2007
Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, also known as Molière (1622- 1673) was a French playwright and actor who is considered one of the greatest masters of comedy in Western literature. He studied at the Jesuit Clermont College, then left to begin a life in the theatre. Thirteen years on the road as an actor helped him to polish his comic abilities, while he also began writing combining Commedia dell'Arte elements with the more refined French comedy. Through the patronage of a few aristocrats including the brother of Louis XIV, he procured a command performance before the King at the Louvre. He was granted the use of the Salle du Petit-Bourbon at the Louvre and the Palais-Royal. He found success among the Parisians with plays such as The Affected Ladies, The School for Husbands and The School for Wives. This royal favour brought a royal pension to his troupe and the title "Troupe du Roi" (The King's Troupe). His satires attracted criticisms from moralists and the Church. Tartuffe; or, The Hypocrite roundly received condemnations from the Church while Don Juan was banned from performance.

Editorial Reviews

Review

There s no doubt that Molière, a stellar playwright and social commentator, is as relevant today as he was in the seventeenth century, when this, his last play, was written. This L.A. Theatre Works production is delivered with all the gusto that Molière's satire on the medical profession deserves. This production is first-rate in every way. The performances by the actors are lively, energetic, and completely insincere as required by Molière. There are no attempts at authentic accents, but that only serves to heighten the humor. One cannot help but imagine how silly all the characters must look. Thoroughly entertaining. --AudioFile Magazine --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

About the Author

Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, known by his stage name, Molière (January 15, 1622 February 17, 1673), was a French dramatist, director, theatre manager and actor. He is considered one of the greatest masters of comedy in Western literature. From a prosperous family and having studied at the Jesuit Clermont College (now Lycée Louis-le-Grand), Molière left with a good education to begin a life in the theatre. Thirteen years on the road as an actor helped him to polish his comic abilities while he also began writing, combining Commedia dell'Arte elements with the more refined French comedy. Other Molière plays by L.A. Theatre Works are The Misanthrope and The School for Wives. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

This play was a great read and it was very funny! I truly enjoyed it and I would definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a great play to read or produce! I am hoping to be able to see the play performed sometime in the near future!
