From Publishers Weekly

A vivid imagination and a love for fantasy are prerequisites for reading Barnett's (Bewitching) newest comedy romance. In 1896, 30-ish attorney Margaret Huntington Smith reluctantly goes on holiday to the South Seas. After the steamship boiler blows, Margaret, three orphaned children and a goat are rescued and brought abroad a lifeboat by Hank Wyatt, an escaped fugitive who was stowed away on Margaret's ship. Despite a raging storm, the castaways make it to a self-contained tropical island where they easily adapt. The only thing they have to do is learn how to get along with each other?not an easy task for Hank, a self-involved, hard-bitten lifer, wrongly accused of murder. He is a reluctant provider, yet he finds within himself a soft spot and becomes a father figure to the children. The goat is Hank's four-legged bane, and Margaret is his human nemesis; her talking drives him crazy. Margaret has her own problems with learning how to be domestic. She burns everything she cooks and occasionally misplaces a child. Soon the six shipwrecks are joined by Muddy, a genie, complete with classic old bottle. Muddy is a silly but delightful character who takes the children flying and serves as foil for a classic comic pas de deux with Hank. In fact, the antics overwhelm the romance, but it's doubtful readers will care. As a whole, the story is unusual: its plot manages to sidestep cliches and stereotypes and the short, fast dialogue give it a refreshingly clipped liveliness.

From Library Journal

Although Barnett's latest demands a greater initial suspension of disbelief than some, once the story gets under way, the characters take over and the fun begins. A genuine genii, an escaped convict with a Humphrey Bogart air, a high-society San Francisco lawyer, and three enchanting children all shipwrecked together on an island paradise provide the unlikely ingredients for a whimsical romp with a tidy resolution. Occasionally, the humor becomes slapstick, and the middle could have been more rigorously edited, but the author's clean writing style and clever characters keep the pace lively. Barnett (Dreaming, Pocket Bks., 1994) has written a number of other light, imaginative historicals. [Barnett lives in Pleasanton, Cal.]

More About the Author

I am a native Californian, a baby boomer who grew up in a very idyllic place at a very idyllic time--on the coast of Southern California in the 60's, although I spent many childhood summers before that on my grandparents' farm in Texas.

So I'm a West Coast girl raised by Southern parents, who grew up in a place where you spent your free time playing volleyball on the beach and weekends dancing to local bands like Beach Boys, Dion, and the Righteous Brothers.

My husband and I met in high school, and I never knew I wanted to be a writer until I was in my thirties and back in college again. I had been an art major the first time around--it was the 60's--quit to make some kind of mark in the world, but I got married instead.

My love of history and reading and art all came together for me when I quit school again, after working toward my history degree and then becoming a mother--something we were told couldn't happen. (The child not the degree.) So with the miracle gift of my daughter, came a new career for me.

I knew then I wanted to write a book, had an idea and more importantly a vision of the kind of stories I wanted to tell. I told myself I could always go back to school.

Funny thing the way life works. Almost two years to the day I quit school, I sold my first book on 50 pages to Pocket Books, a division of Simon and Schuster. That was over eighteen years ago and many books later.

So the road I traveled to become an author had many twists and turns, joys and disappointments. Yet I'm doing something I really love. In so many ways I'm a very lucky woman.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love and laughter on a deserted island., September 30, 1997

This review is from: Imagine (Mass Market Paperback)
MIX: 1. escaped convict (GQ material), 2. a lawyer (a gorgeous blond with legs that go on forever) and 3. three orphans (a 2,5 and 11 year old) on a deserted island. RESULT: Sexual innuendos combined with hilarity frothing with romance and bursting with laughter. When the antics of all the characters don't have you laughing until your sides hurt, then your imagination is running wild with all the romantic opportunities. And if that isn't enough add a goat, a genie and some tropical nights.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, charming and very romantic, April 21, 2000
This review is from: Imagine (Mass Market Paperback)
Whatever you do don't miss this one, you'll regret it! It's charming, heartwarming and left me feeling sooo good. It's the story of Margaret (Smitty), an attorney, and Hank an escaped convict who was wrongly accused of murder. She's an independent woman who can't cook, he's a beat 'em over the head and drag 'em by the hair kinda guy that thinks woman are good for only one thing, until he gets stranded on a desert island with Smitty and three small orphans. There's also a delightful Genie with three wishes who needs to find a true believer to fulfill his destiny.

The verbal sparring between this odd couple is hilarious, Muddy, the Genie, adds a touch of magic and humor to the story & also makes a convenient baby sitter :), the kids are darling and the scenes where Hank warms up to them are really touching. It was so much fun to see Hank's attitude about women and children change after being stuck with them day in and day out with no escape. The last few chapters had me teary eyed. I recommend this one for anyone looking for a feel good romance with a happy ending and lots of sexual tension! This book is the ultimate fantasy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Desert island fun, July 29, 2004
By

This review is from: Imagine (Mass Market Paperback)
Margaret Huntington Smith is a 32 year old successful Attorney in San Fransisco. She is sent away on holiday by her father to the Pacific Islands. Hank Wyatt is an escaped convict from a high security prison on one of the Islands. They are travelling on a ship when the boiler blows and the ship capsizes. Hank manages to get to safety on a lifeboat and also saves Margaret and three orphaned children, Lydia (11 years old), Theodore (5 years old) and Anabelle (just under 2 years old). They sail in the lifeboat until they finally reach a deserted island.

When Hank and Margaret meet sparks fly. He is a hardheaded man and will not listen to Margaret's opinions and she is determined woman who will not let any man put her down. Margaret knows nothing about children or cooking and so will ocasionally lose one of the children and more often than not burn the food. Hank is a hard man and has lived a tough life but finds himself softening and becoming a surrogate father to the three children as Margaret does her best at being mother to the children. As time goes by, the little family become closer and Margaret finds herself falling for the man who is her polar opposite.

This was a fun book to read. As always filled with Jill Barnett's trademark humour, witty dialogue and funny situations. The love story was not rushed but built over the entire length of the book. The children also added a lot of humour to the book as well as tenderness. Throw in a genie from a bottle called Muddy and you have a thumping great read. Highly recommended as with all Jill Barnett's books.
